Problems with Non Embossed Credit Cards

The last time I was in Europe these non embossed cards didn't exist. My Amex and one of my M/C are Embossed but I have my most used M/C that is the new type printed numbers.

Has anyone had any issues with these non embossed cards anywhere in Europe?

Those work nothing to worry about. I have a Mileage plus visa like that like previously stated the data is in the chip

Nope -- chip or strip both work (embossed numbers were for the old make-a-carbon-copy machines which don't seem to be used in Europe ... Or in the U.S. either.)

Actually I needed an Embossed Card in Denali Natl Park this last year when their POS system went down and they had the hand ones for backup...so it does happen but yes infrequently.

Thanks for the replies, I do understand how the cards work, I just wanted to head off any problems ahead of time. I remember reading somewhere recently about some problems with them but cant put my finger on where so I thought I'd ask...Just to be sure, I hope the respondents are answering from DIRECT experience???
Thanks again

The only use of an embossed card is the old fashion paper credit card machines. No one has used those for decades, even in the US. Have had a couple of times when the terminals were down and the back up was paper. Just wrote the numbers. Same technology just slower than the old manual machines. I don't know why the embossing on credit cards has hung around as long as it has.

I think they were still around because it was thought that the raised numbers were harder to counterfeit. That's no longer the case. So finally they're disappearing.

I still have one card with raised numbers. It's my Visa, and it worked just fine in Europe as of November. I think having the chip is the key component, well - that and letting your credit card companies know that you're traveling. Have a wonderful adventure!

Two years ago the rental agent for Europcar refused to take my credit card for payment of any additional charges and a deposit because it was not embossed. I told her that it was absurd, particularly since she wasn't going to run it through one of those old fashioned machines. She said that's the rule, and that was that.

I was at a golf course in Florida a couple of weeks ago when one of the POS terminals in the pro shop went down. The woman behind the desk pulled out the old paper slide machine (first one I'd seen in a long time), but the customer had a non-embossed card. Just meant she had to write the numbers down. There's always a way.

Last trip to Europe I had a new non-embossed card. It never made a difference.
