Using WhatsApp to text and call, yesterday I got an app generated message that said:
"Waiting for this message. This may take awhile...."
After awhile, the message DID appear on my MacBook but has not yet posted on my iPhone.

The first thing I do when I have an issue with my iPhone is to close out the app and then open it and see if that helps.
If not, I would try rebooting your phone to see if that works.
The last thing you could do is delete the WhatsApp app, and then install it again (your phone numbers will appear once you reinstall it) and see if that works.
I'm assuming you have a decent wifi connection?

Try to Force Quit or just reinstall the app on the phone, it sounds more of a problem with the phone and how it communicates with the app, than the app itself.
