Our flights to/from Europe were cancelled. Lufthansa will not refund them because we purchased through Orbitz. Orbitz will not refund them, saying it is Lufthansa’s responsibility.
Any advice on how to proceed?

What does the fine print say on your contract? You will have to get assertive and quote the actual language back to them (whichever one is responsible).
This kind of thing is why I no longer use portals like Orbitz. No one should use them. In 2017, we used cheaptickets to buy Ryanair tickets. The tickets were a total of $85 or so, but $25 was the cheaptickets fee. So, use the portal to find a flight, and then buy it through the direct website of the airline.
I purchased through Lufthansa. Lufthansa cancelled the flights. So far, they will only rebook, no refund. Still trying to find a way to fight it.
Advice welcome!
My ticket to Berlin this weekend was with the travel group, Ovago.com, and they booked the flights with American Airlines. AA then passed off my flights to British Airways who is a partner airline.
I never received notice from BA that my return flight out of Berlin was cancelled. I received a letter from BA saying we could cancel the trip and receive full payment back. Or, we could reschedule it for later. Either way, we had to contact Ovago.com who the trip went thru.
We attempted to contact Ovago, and it took until 4:00 a.m. on the 5th day to get someone on the line. But of course their English was weak and they were across the world. They said because we had the basic, lowest airfare, we couldn't get a full refund--no matter what the email said. And to reschedule the flight would come with large charges and wouldn't be cost effective. We were essentially out $428 x 2 for our tickets.
I finally contacted American Airlines and got a very nice agent. She cancelled my flight and gave me their website to apply for a full refund.
Today, I got emails from British Airways saying we can apply for a voucher online that can be redeemed against future travel for flights taken within 12 months of our original date of departure.
I'm hoping to see a credit on my Visa bill. But if it gets down to it, I would be glad to reschedule next year.
