PrePaid Visa Debit Card

Has anyone ever used one of these? It looks like they charge $20 to get your money back after the trip. I think what I shoudl do is use a Capital One credit card for purchases and a debit card for cash from ATM's. Sound about right? Oh ya, we are going to Europe for 5 weeks this summer, mostly Italy with some time in London and Paris.

Why on earth would you be willing to pay them $20 just to get your remaining money back? Just use a regular ATM debit card. Check around and find one that charges no foreign transaction fee and/or no per-transaction fee for withdrawals (hint: try credit unions). You can even open an account specifically for travel, if you want, so there is no access to your regular account. I carry a local credit union Visa-branded debit card, and a Mastercard-branded Ally Bank debit card, as well as a Capital One credit card.

The preloaded cards have been discussed to death. Don't think anyone views them as an alternative to a fee free debit card.
