Has anyone used a prepaid debit card? I understand there are no fees attached.
On the contrary, Laurel, there are LOTS of fees attached. They are just hidden in the setup fee for the card, and the terrible exchange rate you get. And some have reported here that they have had trouble using them for purchases. Your best bet is a regular ATM card attached to a checking account. You can set up an account separate from your normal checking account and keep your vacation funds in that so that it is not tied to the rest of your money at home.
Prepaid debit card generally carry fees in the range of 10% or more buried in the exchange rate and services charges. A debit card at an ATM is ALWAYS the most convenient and economical.
It was my brother who found out about this while checking on the current price of the Euro. I told him I didn't think make a lot of sense since he already has an ATM card. Anyroad I told him I'd put it to the Rick Steves test. It's his first trip to to Germany in a very long time and he wants to be sure he has all the latest info.
