We are going to the UK for 3 weeks and would like to carry a cell phone. Any suggestions for the most economical process, i.e. buy v rent, buy here v there. thanks

Or even easier ... buy both the phone and PAYG plan at Car Phone Warehouse. They are all over the UK. You can get both a phone and minutes for under 20 GBP.

I agree; just stop at a Carphone Warehouse store (they are all over the place in London and elsewhere). You can buy an unlocked phone with a SIM card loaded with plenty of minutes, for probably less than twenty or twenty-five bucks.
Last year I bought such a phone and SIM card at a CW store in London, for about fifteen pounds. The deal included not only a lot of prepaid talk time for the UK, but a big bonus bunch of international calling minutes which I used to call home a few times. I kept the phone, and when I went back to London last month just got a new SIM card for it (the original one had expired), and found that "topping it up" with ten pounds' worth of talk time was a snap.
