Precursor to Western meditteranean cruise from Barcelona with teens

Greetings! I get such amazing ideas here. My family is going on a 7 night cruise from Barcelona this July. I am looking at going somewhere else for a few days before and looking for recommendations. We will see Barcelona at the end of the cruise for a little bit.
My boys like adventure or new activities. We loved Salzburg and Germany and all the outdoor activities that came with that (alpine slides, castles, falconry show, salt mine) so looking for another creative spot to go!

Nonstops from Denver we are considering are to Paris, Zurich, and Rome (which is on the cruise list). We have done London and Dublin. We aren't really looking for coastal as we will get enough of that on the cruise!

Thanks for any opinions

This July, as in a month from now? You may be scrambling for affordable accommodations and getting into sites during a very busy time of year. I assume under your plan you would be flying to Barcelona at least one day ahead of your cruise (not the day of embarkation). If that is the case I'd pick a location that has multiple daily nonstop flights to Barcelona, that in itself may prove limiting.

How long is "a few days"? Changing cities will result in losing a half day to travel, plus the jet lag factor. I myself would just go directly to Spain even if you don't have a nonstop flight route. Madrid/Toledo maybe and then the high speed train to Barcelona for the cruise.

If it is literally three days, then I would also fly to Barcelona and head somewhere like Montserrat or the Pyrenees.

Since you are spending time in Barcelona at the end of your cruise, I would fly to Madrid, see the city for 2-3 days then take train to Barcelona for Embarkation.

Great, thanks for the advice. I have not been to Madrid or the Pyrenees ever! Will look into it..
