power adapters...

We will be going to Europe on our(Ansterdam,London, and all of Ireland) honeymoon.. We will be staying at hotels (5 star)... Do you all think they will have adapter available or should I purchase one to be on the safe side. Thanks RC

Take your own. And you will need two types - the large pin UK/Ireland plug adapter, and the two pin Euro adapter. More than one of each would be best, in case you lose one.

Reid, To begin with, I believe it's important to clarify what you're referring to? Are you referring to a Plug Adapter which adapts a North American style Plug to fit European outlets OR are you referring to a Voltage Converter which "steps down" the voltage from 220 VAC to 115 VAC??? I'd recommend taking along at least two Plug Adapters, as they're easy to misplace. Note that you'll require two different types, one for use in the U.K. and one for use in Europe. That means you'll need to pack four Plug Adapters. Another point to clarify is whether the devices you'll be travelling with are designed for "world operation"? You'll need to check the "Input Voltage" specifications on EACH device that you'll be travelling with! If the spec's state "Input 100-240 VAC", the product will work fine in Europe with only a Plug Adapter. Happy travels!

My experience is that some hotels, regardless of rating may have one or two adapters behind the desk or hiding in a cupboard somewhere that they will lend out if nobody else has them. My experience is also that they generally will charge a deposit. By miles and miles the far easier thing is to take your own (really cheap) adapters. Take 2 of each - they are small and many are forgotten by travelers so the back-up one comes into use.

I recommend getting them ahead of time. You never know exactly what the hotel will have or if they might have run out of what you need. You may also want to use one in an airport or other place if you want to charge your phone or use some other gadget on the go. I've gotten a couple of converters from Target and from Radio Shack where they have several different plug types included and you just flip or slide out the type that you need. They're handy and real space savers when you're traveling to multiple countries with different plugs since you don't need a separate adapter/converter for each type of plug. I have also seen similar devices that are just adapters that do not convert the voltage, though I have not used one. So, you might want to check in to some of the multi-plug converters/adapters.

We bought our plug adapters at Radio Shack and used them all the time. The voltage converter, we which we lugged for 2 weeks, wasn't needed. I'm sure that was the reason the carry-on bag it was packed in was always pulled aside for further inspection!

After leaving one adapter (so far...) behind, I added a small piece of duct tape to secure it. It's a lot harder to forget your adapter when it is taped to an electronic device. They are small and easy to leave behind when you are in a hurry. They are so inexpensive that we've always taken at least two of each type along with us.
