My family is traveling to Europe this Summer and would like to bring powdered supplements in our carry-on bag. The limit to bring into the US is 12 oz. Does anyone have experience in air travel within Europe carrying this sort of thing? Thank you!
Hi lak,
My family is traveling to Europe this Summer and would like to bring powdered supplements in our carry-on bag.
Where are you flying from? -
The limit to bring into the US is 12 oz.
Is it to be understood that you will be visiting the USA or returning to the USA with supplements?
Here is the official link to TSA https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/protein-or-energy-powders
International security policies may vary. Perhaps this falls under "Customs?"
Can you split up the 12 oz bags in each person's carry on?
It is a good idea to always check the tsa.gov site for updates and changes.
Europe is not Europe. Exact countries are needed.
You can't buy it there? happycow dot net lists vegan and vegetarian stores and restaurants. Often these are 'health food stores' that might include the supplements you want.
If you go with the 12 oz, then that should be allowed per person. And is that 12 oz by weight or volume? I would think you would get more by weight. Do you even need that amount?
You need to consider we are not import/export specialists. It could depend on country, airport, what the supplement is, medical, controlled, experimental. You may ask on a country specific forum like TripAdvisor, but you need to provide more details than what you provided here.
However you decide to do it, it most likely would be less suspicious in its original container.

Good points unless the OP has special supplements. I don't know anything about supplements, lol.
Thank you for quick responses!
We are flying from US to Scotland ( layover Amsterdam) then flying Edinburgh to Bath via Flybe, then Heathrow to US.
I checked USA TSA and see we can bring up to 12oz in carry on luggage.
Anyone have “ experiences” with that?
Would like to know about flying inside countries above. Internet searches are confusing... Thank you!
Since I have been unable to find unscented laundry detergent in Italy in 10 trips to that country, I pack enough for the 4 or 5 weeks we usually spend there. No issue until last year when I was pulled out of the TSA line at both Minneapolis and JFK airports and had to stand around while they tested it. They wiped my hands, too, with some kind of special wipes.
Heathrow to US.
lak, I can vouch for Heathrow. Security is on point.
I don't know how many 12 oz bags of the supplement formulas you are bringing with your family. It may raise a flag going through security scanners where you'll be plucked and examined.
Is it possible, as I suggested before, to split up the 12 oz bags respectively in each person's carry on? < at least on the USA side.
Or, perhaps take up the suggestion of buying your supplements abroad unless they are special and hard to get.
Official UK customs page.
For domestic flights inside UK there is no restriction, e.g. buying something legal in Scotland and flying to Bath.
Don't take more than you will use during the trip. That way you have none to bring back with you so no worries going through US check.
Just consider that security people anywhere can't just tell whether that white powder is cocaine, anthrax or a legal supplement just by looking at it (especially through the x-ray machine). Even if you helpfully label it. I've had them open bags to look over foot powder that I packed in the original container.
There are no limits on powder in hand luggage in the EU. However, powder can block the view of the luggage screener and you might be pulled out for further inspection.
Metamucil pulled out for explosive check. Do not know how many oz I had. I was unsure about it, placed it in an exterior pocket in the bag. Then, on my way. When cycling in Italy, France and Spain I carried all kinds of powders for drinks and protein drinks. Never pulled out.
