Postage question

Hello,

I was wondering about postage within Europe. I wrote (and stamped) a postcard in Norway last week, but forgot to mail it before I left. I am assuming that if I sent it from my current location (France), it wouldn't be accepted, but I can't find confirmation of that. On a more general note, can the postage of one EU country be used in another? For example, could I use postcard stamps bought in Sweden, to send postcards to the US from France?

Thanks!
C.

I seriously doubt that will work. Same as if you wanted to mail something from Canada and put US stamps on it. They are still different countries no matter how close knit they are. Not saying it couldn't slip through, but I would be surprised if it did.

No, it only works with Euro. Each country has it own rates for postage, stamps, etc. You are the owner of new stamps for you new hobby stamp collecting.

Buy another stamp. How much are we talking about? A couple of euro?

Hi,

Keep in mind that even though countries are on the Euro the postage of one Euro country differs from another Euro country for postcards going to the US. Postage from Germany for postcards to the US is 80 cents, last year it was 75 cents. I know I send a lot of postcards. A few years back it was one Euro. Postage cards from Austria to the US is 1,70 Euro, double the German postage.

On sending a postcard with a German stamp, say from France to the US: I did that a couple of times a few years ago, they arrived but I think it was just luck in that the two cards got through. I wouldn't chance it too much.

Than you all for your replies. I'll just buy a new stamp and save the Swedish stamps for when I'm back there in a few weeks!

I can remember years ago a display in the Weymouth post office of cards that had been posted in the town with foreign stamps and thus would not be delivered. Jersey and Guernsey in this case probably.

A Norwegian stamp will work in France just like a Mexican or Canadian stamp will work in the US.

They are all independent, sovereign, separate countries and only honor their own stamps.

Or wait until you get home. Stick it into an envelope sign domestic postage and mail. It might be faster if you are near trip's end and your friends will get uncanceled stamps for their collection.

An Italian friend of mine if sending something important internationally would always drive a few miles across the border so it went via the Swiss post. Maybe the Italian one has improved since ...

Many of the post companies in Europe are private these days as well.
