Portugal, Morocco, Spain Trip - Need Help

Hi! I'm planning my honeymoon and wanted to know what you think of this 17-night itinerary:

April 2-6: Flying from NYC to Porto (arriving at 2pm), spending 4 nights there with a day trip to Douro Valley
April 6 - 10: Taking the train down to Lisbon, spending 4 nights there with a day trip to Sintra
April 10 - 15: Flying to Marrakech, spending 4 nights there with a stop in Chefchaouen on the way up to the northern coast
April 15 - 19: Driving up from Chefchaouen and taking the ferry across to Spain and spending 3 nights in Seville with a day trip to Granada and Vejer de la Frontera
April 19: Flying out of Seville back to the US

Does this seem too crammed? Any city that you'd cut out or not spend as much time there?

First, you are wise to not try and do Morocco as a "day trip" via ferry - flying to Marrakech is a good move.

That said, about your plan to return from Morocco back to Spain via ferry...why?

Consider this alternative: rather than wasting a day or two driving from Marrakech north to the coast, taking the ferry, working your way to Seville, etc., you could instead take the train from Marrakech to Fes (surprisingly good trains, a legacy of the French - the train station in Marrakech is stunningly beautiful and worth a look even if you're not taking the train), then after a day or two in Fes, fly back to Spain (or elsewhere in Europe). Fes is every bit as amazing as Marrakech is (maybe more so), and definitely worth a look. Of course, it's also a great jumping-off point for incredible country to the south, but you would need more time and a car for that. But I'd trade a couple days elsewhere for a day or two in Fes - it's one of the most amazing cities in the world, and you will be just a train ride away.

The flights back from Fes are dirt cheap and easy. Only trick to know about is some of the flights do not go every day (some go every other day, some 3X a week) so you will need to search and plan carefully, maybe shift your travel by a day (maybe two) forward or back to make the flight work. I haven't searched these flights recently but if you look thoroughly, you will find cheap flights to more places across Spain and Europe than you might expect. Fes is worth it.

Have a great trip!

I have been to Morocco as well as all the places you mentioned in Spain.
Itinerary is pretty good, we loved Porto.

Not sure about renting a car in Morocco and dropping it in Spain. I know there can be a huge drop charge if you rent in one country and drop in another.

Granada ia a bit far to do a day trip from Seville.

Oh, there's no way you can do this at all - never mind the fees (I don't think the OP intended that).

Thanks for your help! @David, what do you think about skipping Marrakech and flying straight to Fes from Lisbon? I really want to see Chefchaouen and Fes is closer. Looks like pretty inexpensive flights from Chefchaouen to Seville which is our final destination, too.

What would you recommend?

@geova, thanks for your help! I was considering taking the train or taxi from Marrakech up to Chefchaouen, and then bus or taxi to the ferry.

@MelanieS, I've never been to Chefchaouen so can't tell you about it - not sure what the attraction is there. Without ever having been there, my impression from guidebooks has been that what "Chef" has going for it is that it is "not Tangiers" and is at least away from the worst of the ferry ports, which tend to be grotesque, made-for-tourists traps. I think it's somewhat popular because it's an authentic Moroccan town, rather than "the Tijuana or Morocco." It may actually be quite nice, or it might just be an average Moroccan small city.

That said, I'm quite confident that Chefchaouen would pale by comparison to either Fes or Marrakech, both of which are magnificent. There are plenty of cheap flight options to/from places around Europe from both of these two stunning old cities. I can't imagine that I'd trade a day in either of them for a day in Chefchaouen.

So my advice would not be to skip Marrakech - it's like no place else on Earth. Same is true for Fes. Chefchaouen...I can't say but I'd highly doubt it's remotely in the same league. If you have to pick two places, it would be no contest for me.

On a European trip where you want to include a foray into Morocco, it's a wonderful (and unexpected) way you can "connect" two cities in Europe by using the Marrakech-Fes train line as your "bridge." Fly from Europe to Marrakech, take the train to Fes (or do them in the opposite order), then fly from there to your next destination in Europe. Last time I did this, I flew Madrid to Marrakech, train to Fes, flew back Fes to Paris. It worked out perfectly. If you're trying to connect Lisbon and somewhere in Spain, I'd imagine you could do something similar.

David, you’ve been so helpful! Would you cut time in Porto and Lisbon or not do Porto at all to gain more time in Marrakech and Fes?

This doesn't sound too cramped to me, four days in one place is quite restful. Ronda is only an hour and a half from Seville and is worth the look. One of my favorite stops in Spain. Fantastic views. I did go to Granada because I wanted to see the Alhambra. I took a tour bus from Estepona. It made for a long day but I guess it was the romantic in me. I figured it was my chance to see it. I'm glad I saw it.

I do want to see Chefchaouen. They have day tours from Tangier so I might do that. We had a private tour in Tangiers with a tour guide recommended by Rick Steves, his name was Tuomi (I think) been a few years. It made it worthwhile.

Our friends rented vehicle in Spain, since we don't speak Spanish they arranged in advance for an English speaking GPS through the company.

Marrakech was wonderful, but I found Fes to be even more amazing. Personal experience tip - you can easily navigate the medina of Marrakech on your own. If you want to truly explore the medina in Fes, consider hiring a guide. It is very easy to get lost there.

Fes has fabulous shopping opportunities for handmade crafts. All other things being equal, I'd make it as late a stop on my itinerary as possible so I wouldn't have to carry copper, ceramic or wooden souvenirs around for too long.

You don't have much Spain in your itinerary, too bad. I started planning a three week trip to include Spain and Portugal only. Once I started planning I decided there was so much to see in Spain, the trip went to a whole month and I dropped plans for Portugal (for another trip). I'll see Morocco as a trip on it's own too.

April is a great month in Spain. Lots of celebrations. Two that I'll always remember are Holy Thursday in Zaragosa and the April Fair in Seville. The April fair isn't until May in 2019 but you will be in Seville for part of the Holy Week celebrations. Seville is famous so it will be lively and crowded. Valladolid and Zaragosa also have locally famous celebrations but not a lot of tourists.
