Portugal and Italy Mar 5-19. Please help with plans!

Ok, So we have Italy and Portugal chosen for March 5-19. We like countryside, small towns, shopping, good food, outdoor scenery. I do understand that the weather can be problematic, however it does appear to be warmer here than in other parts of Europe at this time of year, so I like that. I figured we would go to the Lisbon and Porto areas, and then fly to Milan to branch off from there. ALL suggestions for locations, planning, etc. would be helpful. Thanks.

I was going to suggest including Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain but unfortunately, you can't fly to Milan from there (you can fly to Milan from Porto.) So, once you're in Milan consider Varenna, Verona, and maybe Venice. With the time you have that should make a really nice trip.

I would take the train from Milan directly to Verona and then possibly spend your last night in Milan before your return flight. Hopefully you're planning to fly open-jaw--into Lisbon and home from Milan.

Happy planning!
