Popular traditional songs in Europe

I was in Europe a couple years ago with my family and my son and we were having a drink at a bar on the beach in Barcelona. A street musician worked the periphery playing his guitar going through a number of songs (singing in Spanish), all of which I had heard over the course of my life. All of them, I assumed were mega-popular hits in Europe spanning the last couple of decades. I figured one out, 'Una Palona Blanca'.

So, I'm wondering, does anyone on this board have any idea what the others may have been? I know this is a longshot, but thanks for any thoughts you might have.

That song came out in the 1970s. It was also sung by various singers in German.

If you want a good rendition of pop songs of the 1970s and '80 sung in Spanish (or French or German), get a CD of Nana Mouskoui. There were lots of pop hits sung in various languages aside from the original language in the 1970s and '80, or the 1960s.

Remember, "Never on a Sunday" Different linguistic versions of that famous song were done.

Una plaoma blanca was a huge hit in Britain in the mid 70's by the singer and record producer Johnathan King.
King was imprisoned for child sex abuse in 2001, what his is doing now I care not one jot but his songs are noit played on radio in Britain.
Other songs you might hear is the "Birdie song", "Torimalinos I love you "and the worst of them all " Y Viva Espana"

(Una) Paloma Blanca was written by the Dutch musician George Baker in 1975. The song was covered directly by many others. Another hit from George Baker is Little Green Bag, better known as the opening soundtrack of the movie Reservoir Dogs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paloma_Blanca

Not sure that you are referring to the same song. The La Paloma that I have heard was a popular with my Grandfather, who worked in Latin America as an engineer during the 20s and 30s and passed away in 1952.

"La Paloma" is a popular Spanish song that has been produced and reinterpreted in diverse cultures, settings, arrangements, and recordings over the last 140 years. The song was composed and written by the Spanish composer from the Basque region Sebastián Iradier (later Yradier) in the 1850s. In 1859 it was registered at the copyright office in Madrid as a "Cancion Americana con acompañamiento de Piano".[1] Iradier was to die in obscurity within few years, never to learn how popular his song would become.

Wil, that horrible song is a secondary national anthem sung by drunken Brits in the bars of Lloret de Mar and Skegness.
