Pompeii With limited

Best way to visit Pompeii in one day, from Rome, We have a car & family coming too... suggestions - planning for Wed. July 12, 2017 looking to experience history to remember - is it as simple as getting in the car & showing up? How much time needed to have good walk around? Any other great see's? Swimming near by?

I would personally not do it as a day trip from Rome because it will be a very, very long (and tiring) day...it's about 300 miles round trip. You have to factor in getting there and back plus two hours on the ground at a minimum. Many folks, myself included, spent over 4 hours at Pompeii. I would not tag on any other activities if you do it as a day trip. You should also prepare to be very hot as there is little shade (and have proper shoes as well since the pavement is very uneven). Ideally, if you can base yourself overnight in the Sorrento or Naples area, that's a better jumping point for Pompeii. No car needed either if you come down by fast train.

I would agree with Agnes, it is a long way for a day trip. Personally I have visited Pompeii twice and both times spent at least 6 hours there and could easily spend double that. It is a huge area,a small town in fact and so much to see ,a guided tour of the main central area will take at least 2 hours but there really is lots to see and a great deal of walking involved. There is no shade and limited refreshment and toilet facilities within the site.Overnighting in Sorrento or nearby town is a good idea, I have stayed in Vico Equense which is a 20 minute train ride from Pompeii.
