We are trying to choose vacation destination for second half of August (has to be this time). In the recent years we already visited Paris, Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Karlovy Vary. It looks like it will be too hot in Spain and Italy. So, recommendations for sight-seeing vacation in August would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Hard to help without knowing anything about your interests, budget, mobility.
Just for August weather, how about Britain, Ireland, Berlin, Scandinavia?
Focus on the north....Scandinavia, Iceland, Ireland, Wales, Scotland (too hot anywhere else)
England, Wales or Scotland. Reserve soon as hotels, b&B's fill up fast for August.
The one time that I visited Scandinavia, it was in August and I don't recall any downside to that. In Denmark, you're never more than 50km from the coast.
Ireland, Scotland - not hot at all.
Summer months are by far the best time to see Scandinavia. If you haven't been, and are interested in the area, that's the time to go.
Yes, definitely avoid the south. If you can afford it, Scandanavia. Much less expensive, just as good - though different, are Ireland and Scotland. Check the dates for the Edinburgh Festival - it's crowded/expensive then but lots to see and do, including all the fringe events.
Cheaper option than Scandinavia...
Budapest
Kraków
Warsaw
Berlin
I didn't chime in earlier because the only months that I think you should go elsewhere then Budapest is July and August ..... unless you are very young and love to party. Budapest like Vienna, Prague, and everywhere else in Central and South Europe will be hot and the Europeans don't really understand good AC.
So many choices. I agree, go for Northern Europe in August.
Here are some ideas:
1) Fly into Amsterdam, visit Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg;
2) Britain is wonderful, not just London, but get out and see the countryside.
3) Scandinavia is great, but expensive. Denmark and Norway is another option.
Switzerland would have cooler weather, also consider St. Petersburg, Russia.
August is hot. The best climate at that particular time is in Scandinavia, Iceland, Scotland, Ireland, Baltic republics. With global warming climate is getting rapidly hotter than it used to be when I lived there 30 years ago. I stopped visiting most of Europe in July and August.
Consider the lakes region in the north of Italy plus could tie in with Switzerland.
Hi,
First of all, it is very true that August is hot with oppresive heat in Central Europe, such as Vienna, Poland, and Budapest, even in Munich, ie a broiler. If that doesn't bother you too much, (yes, I do know a few people who are not put off by the heat), go to Vienna and Munich in August. August is the month where the hotels offer their cheapest rates. That's one advantage weighed against the heat.
I've never been but Norway is on my short list and from what I understand summer is the time to go. Also consider Iceland or Scotland. All on my list. I am a Southern Europe fan and prefer to spend my trips in Spain, Italy, Greece, but I also travel in May/June or October/November. The more northern places are on my list for if/when I take a summer trip!
