Please help with Itinerary Switzerland/Germany

Hi! I'm getting myself confused, so I hope I don't confuse you!

Will be in Central Switzerland for several days from end of August until Sept. 6. Spending night in Lugano to take the Bernina Express on the 7th. Since it is an all day trip that will end in either Chur or Davos I figured to spend the night in either Chur or Davos.

The problem is that from there we want to go to Fuessen area of Germany to go to Neuschwantstein and Hohenschwangua. Was planning to go from Chur/Davos to Lindau, Germany and spend the night there on the 8th. Thought that might break it up. Then spend the night in Hohenschwangau on the 9th. Tour the castles on the 10th then in the late afternoon take train to Salzburg. (spending the 10th, 11th, 12th in Salzburg so we can take side trip to Berchtesgaden by bus)

Now I'm second guessing myself. Is there somewhere else in Switzerland or Germany that we could stay on the 7th after the Bernina Express that would allow us to spend an extra night in Hohenschwangau so we could also go to Linderhof on one day and then get to Salzburg that afternoon/night?

Does that make sense?! Maybe I'm trying to do too much. Can't see straight now, so need some advice please. Thank you in advance for suggestions.

"Maybe I'm trying to do too much."
Probably.

On Sept. 7, you might head instead to Salzburg. Or stop over in Innsbruck for a shorter ride and continue the next morning.

Once in Salzburg, Berchtesgaden isn't your only option for an outing. Herrenchiemsee Palace, on an island in Chiemsee Lake just one hour from Salzburg, makes for an excellent day trip. It's a Ludwig II palace, not a castle (but then Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are palaces too; N'stein just has a fake castle exterior.)

From Salzburg you can board a direct train to Prien, where Herrenchiemsee is located. A boat shuttles visitors to/from the island from Stock harbor.

For some real castles: Visit Hohensalzburg in Salzburg and/or Hohenwerfen in nearby Werfen. Hohenwerfen Fortress (setting for 60's Eastwood film "Where Eagles Dare") has a falconry show as part of its offering: http://www.salzburg-burgen.at/en/werfen/besucherinfo/index.htm

Hallstatt is a popular day trip from Salzburg as well.

Thank you Russ for your suggestions! I have thought about Herrenchiemsee. I have seen the movie "Where Eagles Dare" so that would be interesting!
