Planning a Post-Pandemic Vacation

Here is a link to an article in The Atlantic:

https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2020/04/post-pandemic-vacations-pinterest/609907/

The author asserts that the act of drumming up excitement for a post-pandemic trip can be therapeutic, because it gives our brains something concrete to focus on. Further, being able to look ahead to positive experiences helps break up the monotony of everyday life. (Studies have found that pre-trip anticipation can be the most enjoyable part of a vacation.)

I have found it difficult to think about future vacations in these uncertain times. It is hard to plan for something that may not happen. I do enjoy the occasional random flashback memories of past trips.

Which is why Anderfuren and many Pinterest users like her have come to
see the site as a welcome window into life after the pandemic. It’s a
comforting and collaborative way to envision and organize a future
that feels harder to imagine than ever.

Can anyone suggest other sites? Sounds like good therapy for some.

Boy, do I ever agree with that. Every Sunday morning my wife and I have a 'date' at our local Tim Hortons (not so much lately, as our deck has less germs), to plan our next trip. Like you Bob, our enthusiasm is starting to take a nosedive, but we did just receive 5 RS books that we ordered last week on his $5 special.

I've never really used Pinterest that much, but my wife does quite a bit-including for some trip planning-which seems to be the point of the article.

I just bought eight books in the $5 sale. I figure I can use all the time I'm not traveling now to plan my next few trips.

I don't know the dates but I can still plan my itineraries. Hotels and restaurants may change but I don't think historical sights or most larger museums are going to close.

The one thing I refuse to do is sit and moan about never being able to travel again. While we may not now be able to set foot on foreign shores, that day will come and I'll be ready.

I work in a covid lab. You can bet that travel planning/anticipating is part of most days. Of course, I limit booking, and don't get down to much of the nitty gritty, but it is a Godsend as a mental break from what I do at work.
Though, I admit, I had a rude awakening last week when the city Public Health officer told us to anticipate Covid compromises (masks, distancing, possiblity of shut downs, etc etc) until late 2021 or into 2022. Because, of course, this affects both my working life AND my 'trying to keep myself sane' private life. I have crossed off several plans that I thought might happen in the Fall and Winter. Spring plans (including rebooking of a cruise that was cancelled last April) are looking like 'no goes'. So today I was looking at where I could fly non-stop from Ottawa that also isn't a current hot covid mess - for March/April. Even if I don't go then, I will have learned something new, chatted on line with folks about options, and having the basis of a plan for whenever it does happen. As I spend some winters doing similar anyway, I am okay with not seeing these come to fruition. It is how I hide from the long dark bitter cold of an Ottawa winter, where even maintaining local social connections are difficult.
If I was at home instead of in the office, I may be diverting energy in projects in place, but as that isn't going to happen until retirement, I'll work on things I can pick up and put down as the energy allows.

Late 2021 should ideally see me retiring so I have a 3 month southeast Asia sojourn I am planning - or at least reading about. Now if that has to be cancelled too, well maybe I'll just delay retirement and earn more traveling money.

Fantasy planning has kept my mind active and my body away from the refrigerator. I bought four RS books during the sale and three several months ago. I have a whole trip planned on paper which includes itinerary and a packing list. Timing of course depends on Covid. But I’ll be already to book when it’s time.

Frank II, yr attitude reminds me a bit of my friend Rose the catholic nun....
At age 30 she became a vegetarian, began to run 2 miles a day, and completed the Master's Degree (at her own expense) required for ordination. Her plan is to live long enough that when the Catholic church starts to ordain women, she can be one of the 1st thru the door.
Your lips (and Rose's) to God's ear.

First,
..I, Am starting to Ignore the following posts starting with....
- I Believe...
- I feel....
- I know....
- In my opinion...
- I read...
- I’m sure....
- I was told...
- And many more conversational start ups...
- So, what I know (Ha,ha) is that I will continue with my positive plan of travel, with my husband, family, girlfriends, daughter, son, etc, etc...will plan, read and keep collecting my reward points because where I am in my stage of life, I need the positive and Beneficial reward that positive thinking of my future brings me. All of us, in my circle have the F’’k Covid, Life will go on . Well I’m aware that many people in different places will not have such a positive perspective, due to many factors. Each to their own thoughts..

Well, I already had a trip mostly planned for June/July 2020, so I am ready for 2021 with the research done. And I confess that I pulled the trigger on flights into Edinburgh and out of Manchester for next May/June. However, I bought with miles and wanted the best connections in Business, which tend to disappear quickly. And I am feeling somewhat safe in that I can change once with no fees - if I need to change flights till even later. So, while still a little bit of a gamble, the reward seemed to outweigh the risk. Plus it is amazing how much better I feel!

Off to check out Pinterest. Ha!

We do a big Europe trip every second year 4-5 weeks .

Next year was our year .

I’m not planning on it - I am the opposite of some of you as I find it depressing .
Bought a vacation cabin nearby and plan on visiting it a lot more .

I want to travel again - but not in masks and fear - I will wait till there is a tried and true vaccine as I would die if I got covid - period ( health issues )

I look at our photos of last year - best trip yet - but lots of people and crowds - and no worries then - it was wonderful

Luckily I live in a beautiful place .

Yes you do Pat, we visited Victoria and it is lovely. I agree with you. We will wait for a vaccine. My husband has heart health issues so I don’t want him to get sick. Ironically we didn’t go to Europe last summer, drove to Montreal and Quebec For 10 days, because we were retiring this year and had two trips planned. One for 3 weeks (London/Dublin) and one for two months (Croatia and Paris). My husband still thinks we will go to Croatia before the end of the year, but I am more realistic. Some days I am more upbeat then others, trying to focus on the good things happening in our life.

Count me among those who aren’t interested in planning my next trip. I daydream occasionally, but no concrete planning. It just makes me sad. By no means am I feeling sorry for myself. I just can’t get any enjoyment out of planning a trip I may not get to take fo a while.
