Plane Fares over Christmas Holidays

I'm flying BOS - NUE - MUC - BOS over Christmas - Return trip on 1/1. Been tracking fares for about 4 months and for the past 3 weeks I've been getting Lufthansa for $915...down from $1140 when I started. I assumed fares would go up some around the holidays so am thinking this might be the low point; do you think this is about as good as I'll get or should I give it more time. (Lufthansa is our preference - my mother likes to fly European airlines to Europe and has turned up her nose to Continental, Delta etc)

My opinion is its too early. But as they say "I have no skin in the game". Only you can decide what is a good price for you.

My experience two years ago (buying in May) for Christmas tickets was that the price only dipped once about $60 (for 6 tickets) once a couple months after I bought. This was Lufthansa. You might get a deal if you wait, but our flights were full both ways (we returned 12/31), and the price kept creeping up and up. It is a popular time to travel. You might get lower with a different carrier.

My rule of thumb...buy about 12 weeks out...still says too early, but as Arnold pointed out, I have nothing invested. I do not think fares would go up for those dates, they are already inflated above what you might find pre or post holiday, my hunch is in the next few weeks you might see a decrease, then an adjustment up or down depending on traffic. Just don't hold me to it.

Hello Elaine. If you want to fly within the United States of America, during the last week in December, and in the first week of January, I recommend : buy the airline tickets now. All the tickets will be sold (for seats in the coach section), soon. And tickets for flights to Europe, that you want, are likely to be all sold, well before Christmas. And, I think $915. (including Tax and fees) is not a bad price. Prices for airline tickets are high this year (2010).

I flew Toronto-Buda, Prague-Toronto over Xmas one year. In late Aug flights were about $1000 CDN with KLM. I could not get approval to take the time off until mid-Sept, by which time they were over $2000. I ended up booking with LOT Polish Airlines for $1500 each.

My feeling is that if the schedule works and you feel the price is reasonable, book it. They are more likely to go up a lot then down a lot.
