Rick's picnic set says it is TSA approved, but it has a wine bottle opener. Has anyone taken a set in their carry on? Did you have any problems. We are going on vacation in a couple of weeks and I am hoping to take the one I ordered. Thanks!
A corkscrew is allowed by TSA if it does not have a knife blade (for cutting the foil on the top of the wine bottle). And the picnic set knives are plastic so they're okay.
The word we've heard is that, technically, on European airlines (not TSA), any kind of corkscrew can be a problem. But TSA will allow it out of the US, if the corkscrew does not have a knife blade.
Thanks Kent. I know it said it was TSA approved, but you never know what they will actually let go through.
Do you plan to fly in Europe? The EU does not allow any corkscrews.
Actually this upcoming trip is in the U.S.
They don't allow corkscrews to come into the EU or when you fly out?
Frank means that the EU doesn't allow corkscrews in carryons (when flying out, not in).
While we're on the topic of the picnic set, I just received the one I bought during the accessories sale. I think it would be better if it came apart in the middle rather than the bottom, that way the container could be used as two cups.
As far as the cork-screw, I looked at it in wonder when it said it was carry-on friendly. I have my doubts but seeing as I could never be a carry-on traveler, no problem.
Andrea (great name by the way ;) ), I thought the same thing when I saw the corkscrew, which is why I posted this question. I do carry on so I have some concerns. I guess the worst that could happen is they take it away from me.
I really hope that someone who has gotten through security with this set will post.
Thanks for all the replies.
We just went thru Amsterdam security 2 weeks ago with the RS picnic set in our carry on. I forgot it had a corkscrew until we were looking for one later in the trip and I remembered it had one in the set. Then we thought -- wow that made it thru security! Hmmm. It is wrapped in plastic and is not so big, but still?
Four of us each carried on a Rick Steves Picnic Set from USA to Italy and back in June. No questions asked.
As you say, worst case scenario is they would take the corkscrew (but not the whole picnic set).
The corkscrew is no problem at all within USA. It's not on the TSA prohibited list, and that's all that matters.
We bought a corkscrew at our destination, and then put it in our checked baggage on the way home. Now, whenever we use it, it reminds us of vacation. :-)
