Pick my May trip for me please.

I have friends coming in the third week of April and the third week of May.

I have a trip to Montenegro, with a friend, booked for 11 - 18 June. I am really looking forward to that … sort of.

I will need to get back to D.C. for maybe 3 days to see family around 4 July. I checked flight prices today, not bad. I might, just might (probably not) run down to Longview and see Bubba, Billy Bob and Sue Ann if I can find a cheap flight to Shreveport.

August a friend wants to go to Asia. I have no desire to go to Asia, but its Asia or the sofa so …. Probably going. Funny how that works.

My son wants me to meet up with him, the wife and the rugrats in Portugal the first of September. That sounds like fun,

Okay, so I have the last week of April and the first week or two of May free to just get out on my own and decompress with no obligations to anyone but me. But thanks to all the other plans funding is tight. Still, time to see something new, even if it’s just a weekend. So, I decided on Chișinău. It's been on my radar for years and it meets all the requirements for cost and convenience and wine. It was decided, then just for grains I checked a few more possibilities. Never do that. Always run with your first gut feeling and never look back ... or you end up doing a post like this.

I checked out Wizzair and Ryanair for cheap flights with two-day breaks between there and back; and I looked more to the east where things are more affordable .... and often a heck of a lot more interesting.

Here are the most promising possibilities. Your suggestions, comments, recommendations please. The trip will be carryon only and the prices reflect that. My hotel budget is $125 a night which might not be possible in some of the location given my standards. The most expensive airfare plus the hotels works out to about $600. Then maybe another $100 for ground transfers and another $100 for I dont know what and my budget is maybe $800 tops.

Wizzair

  • Chișinău: Never been (almost) great wine country apparently. So, a food and wine tour mostly. I found one company that is still running tours to Odesa. Gwad, I would love that. Sat – Tues (3 nights) $190 RT 18:05 arrival 14:25 Departure
  • Yerevan: Some interesting in the city, but I get the feeling that the country is better and with only 2 full days ???? Thurs – Sun $190 RT 11:00 arrival 17:30 departure
  • Larnaca: Well, a beach holiday. Plenty warm. Some pretty interesting cultural cityscapes but a lot of new too. Thurs – Sun $220 RT 12:25 arrival 19:10 departure
  • Tallinn: Becoming popular. More refined than most of the list.
    Thurs – Sun $110 RT 16:30 arrival 21:30 departure
  • Skopje: I have looked at this in the past, not sure what there is to see or do. Especially on a two-day trip with no fly rod. Friday – Mon $150 RT 15:20 arrival 11:25 departure
  • Krakow: Two days probably not enough, but nice that they have brought back the direct flight. Sun – Wed $110 RT 13:50 arrival – 08:50 departure
  • Bucharest: I said no repeats on this, but I always manage to enjoy my time in Bucharest. Maybe the theater this time, if I can convince someone I know Bucharest to go along. It’s been nearly 15 years since the last and I sort of remember enjoying it. Thurs – Sun $110 RT 22:20 arrival – 23:10 departure

Ryanair

  • Paphos: Another beach holiday with some interesting cultural cityscape. Friday – Monday $150 RT 19:35 arrival – 20:000 departure
  • Tirana: Another repeat but I have a friend who owns a hotel near the beach in Sarandë, so housing is free. Beach and seafood holiday. But not real excited about the town itself. Sun – Wed $60 07:25 arrival – 22:20 departure

I will say those sure are some “off the beaten track” locations 👍

Ok, never been but based on Google Maps how about Burgas Бургас, Bulgaria?

And there is a direct flight to Burgas. Its a great city and not far from Nessebar which really is worth the time to visit. And as you can tell from that description ... been there. But not a bad choice for a return trip. I am thinking maybe early September for that would be ideal.....

But just two days. I am afraid if I do a two day trip that I will never return to do it right. BUT, its on the list because its still so tempting.

If it were me, I'd vote for Krakow but that's because I'd rather go for 2 days than 0 days. But I understand the internal conflict. I would like to go for 5 ish days.

Free hotel on the beach sounds like decompression to me. I vote for Sarandë!

I dislike expressing gratitude. I never feel like i do it well enough. That would drive me crazy. But like Krakow, its hard to refuse.

Chișinău was the easy first choice until i discovered that they are still running tours to Odesa. I want to go back to Odesa and for that I need more than two days.......

Of those on the list, I've only been to Krakow. But Yerevan is definitely on my bucket list.

I'd vote for Tallinn or Paphos.

I had a Finnish friend years ago who loved Tallinn. I'd like to see it.

Paphos is relatively popular with British people. That might put you off, but you'll be amongst quite a lot of English speakers I'd imagine.

Mr É, I'm pleasantly suprised that you have so many friends. I never would have thought.

Enjoy your trip, wherever it takes you.

Gundersen, some travel to see all the old churches and some travel to meet people and try and get a little understanding, or at least exposure, to the rest of the world. OR, put more correctly, I have observed that Europeans have terrible taste in friends.

GerryM, the only problem with the British people is the language barrier. My oldest friend here in Budapest is one of you and I'll be danged if I can understand half of what he says. If you do come here, or the next time you come here, let me recommend "Bob's Kitchen" for breakfast, lunch or dinner or just a pint. The place has a good proper bar and serves that horrible nearly fluorescent green mash with most everything.

I love Bucharest, but I just get in trouble there, and I have been four times in 15 years so I crossed it off the list. With the help here I will keep narrowing it down. I wrote a few tour companies in Chișinău because with only 2 days I dont want to waste a lot of time trying to find the right bus and because its also about people. Two of the companies wrote back and wanted to take me to Transnistria which just sounds incrediably inappropriate. But one actually paid attention to the information I sent and wrote back and put together two incrediable days. So Chișinău is probalby going to be a contender. Do people even realize that this sort of thing exists in Moldova: https://www.pelago.com/img/products/MD-Moldova/mimi-castle-with-wine-tasting/8c50d3bf-87a0-4eb5-853c-23af2766e2dd_mimi-castle-with-wine-tasting-xlarge.webp I will spend today doing a little research and see who else I can bump up on the list. I will start with Krakow and Paphos since they both come well recommended.

I have the same problem. I can barely understand myself sometimes :) My Scottish accent still throws people in London occasionally.

Thank you for the recommendation.

Tallinn! Take a tip-based walking tour from EstAdventures or Red Umbrella Tours. Visit the food hall. Ride the tram to see outlying areas. Eat delicious food! Very interesting history, passionately shared by the local guides.

Den, to my surprise, even that far north there are some Vineyards. Tallinn might have to be a city stop and only that. Which isnt bad at all.

A lot of what shapes my decisions is where I get the best planning support. For such a short stay I dont want to mess around with transportation; and for stays in locations that are half the cost of Western Europe, I shouldnt have to.

I have three companies in Moldova working hard to put together packages and I have a couple of leads in Skopje but I am coming up short in Tallinn right now. Havent even scratched the surface on Krakow or Yerevan.

For what it’s worth, when I was in the Baltics, I read that it was a bit too far north for good grapes. So the wines are fruit based. I had some really good local wines, but none were made from grapes.
