Mick,

Great to hear that you had such a good time. Enjoyed looking at your photos.

You've reminded me that I need to take another look at the ThinkTank products, as I'm always looking for a better method to travel with my dSLR and associated kit.

Cheers!

Great photos!! I used onebag.com as well and it is great for planning. Thanks for sharing!

@Ken Yeah, Think Tank makes kick ass products in my opinion.

@Kate I follow almost every advice from that site except for bundle wrapping. I find that it makes life harder even though it may give you a little extra space.

Thanks Kalee, Maggie, Carol, bluedenim, JB and Leslie.

@Carol I used a Nikon D300. Two lenses that I brought on the trip were Nikon 50mm f/1.4 and 12-24mm f/4.

Hello Mick. I thank you for the links to the website for seeing your photographs. I like your photographs. I like the photograph of the entrance to the train station in London. Perhaps you could enter that photograph in a photography contest.

I have silently admired your amazing (amazing!) photos and read through your blogs, all the while intending to post to tell you how utterly incredible I think they are. So today I'm finally getting around to it - thank you so much for sharing!

And that photo of you and your wife jumping on the bed is absolutely priceless.

Your photo quality and composition is quite remarkable. Are you a professional, just taken classes from a great teacher, read every manual that came with the camera, have exceptional equipment, or a born natural talent? Please share some tips or send me a PM. I would love my photos to be half the works of art yours are. I just returned from Italy yesterday and your images served to magnify the warm memories still fresh in my minds eye. Mille grazie

Thanks again.

@Lise - I'm a part-time wedding, children photographer. At least that's what I try to focus on. So a few tips:

  • Find your style. Your photographs should have a personality. http://www.travelphotographers.net/ can give you a pretty good idea.

  • Pay attention to details. In addition to landscape shots, look at the details of the places you visit.

  • Don't afraid to experiment.

  • Totally immerse yourself in the culture and environment. Doing so will allow yourself to see things in different perspectives.

But don't forget that you aren't on a trip just to take photos (unless you are). I always remind myself to enjoy the places I visit first.

I used to like DK guidebooks because they had tons of photos and nice illustrations. But nowadays, I prefer how Rick Steves' books as they allow me to use my imagination much more.

Great blog and pics Mick,,, really enjoyed your trip vicariously ! It did sound a bit tiring though,,,, but you and your wife and young and looks like you took any set back as an adventure,,, which is of course the best way to enjoy any travel..

So.. whens the next trip,,, and when you return would you spend more time in one place,, or seee different places?

Hi Mick,

I just finished reading your blog and it sure took me back. I did a trip last year that included Gimmelwald (I stayed at Esther's too), Cinque Terre (I stayed 3 nights in Manarola and 2 in Vernazza and I did the hike - awesome), Rome, and Paris, so I really enjoyed reading about your adventures.

Your photos are spectuacular as well; great composition, colors, etc. Lovely, they really make me want to sit down and start planning my next trip.

Thanks for posting.

Cheers,
Maggie

@Pat - It was very tiring the first 4-5 days or so because we started in big cities so there were lots to see and do. Jetlag was also a contributing factor and maybe a cold as well because it was quite cold in London.

Next trips - Thailand definitely next year. I have also been looking at airfare deals to Milan, Amsterdam and Iceland. If I saw a $200-300 roundtrip deal like earlier this year, I would probably jump on a plane for a 4 day visit and spend more time in one place.

Hi Maggie,

I remember reading your blog earlier this year while I was planning my own trip. Gave me a lot of good detailed info. Thanks for sharing!

So you quit your job. Are you going back or traveling full time for now?

I wish I were traveling full time now. I did take some other smaller road trips here in the US this past year, but alas, now it is time to go back to work.

I've been looking for some time now and man, it's tough out there right now. So, my full time job right now is looking for a job.

Cheers,
Maggie
