Photos and iPod Touch

Is there a way to transfer my photos from my digital camera to my iPod Touch w/o going through a computer? I would like to post pics to my Facebook page but I'm worried that many internet cafes will not allow me to download pics due to fear of virus infection. Any ideas?

From what I have read, I do not believe the iPod camera connector cable works with the Touch.

John, yours is an interesting question. As an iPod Touch owner, I've never heard of a way to do this, but I would guess it's only a matter of time before it can be done. You're right, in some cases internet cafes will not want you to hook up hardware/drives to their computers, but I've had good luck using computers at hostels/hotels I am staying at, just ask politely beforehand.

Yes there is--Apple sell a cable at apple.com/support/ipod called the "iPod camera connector which thurns the Ipod into a HD. Have been using it for three+ years with an 8gig classic. If I remember, the cable is about $30.

You guys made me curious, and it appears that it will work-the caveat is that the forums I looked at say to e-mail Apple support for sure.
The new adapter looks lightly different than what we use, however, at Amazon it is still $29. I will try it on my Ipod touch in the next couple of days--use it with both a Nikon D70 and a Sanyo pocket

John,

I've never tried to transfer photos to an IPod Touch using an Adpater cable. While it might be technically feasible to connect a Camera to the IPod Touch, I doubt that the two devices would be able to "talk" to each other.

The MAC version of the IPod desktop software stores the photos in a folder within I-Photo. I'm not sure how the PC version handles that? It's unlikely that your Camera will have the ability to access the photos folder.

The easiest and simplest way to accomplish the tasks you mentioned would be with a Netbook.

Good luck!

I have not tried what you are suggesting, but as a confirmed Apple guy, this is my understanding;

All iPods can be used as storage devices from your computer. When you update your iPod's content, you can add files of any sort to the iPod for safe storage or transfer. Additionally, I have heard some nebulous talk of being able to do this directly with some sort of adapter, as the others have suggested.

HOWEVER, no iPod has the software necessary to "open" or display these files. You could store a MSWord document for example - but you could not read it. When you download photos from your computer to your iPod, those photos are first formatted by your computer for display on the iPod. Without that formatting process, I doubt your iPod would be able to display the image, much less manipulate it in any way.

But I would be very interested in knowing if I am wrong....

I found this article today:

Apple’s refusal to spec their devices with memory card readers continues to irritate. My assumption has always been that the lack of an SD card reader on the iPhone has to do with two things: discouraging customers from buying the lowest priced iPhones and cheaply supplementing the storage with an SD card instead of shelling out a couple hundred more on the higher-capacity models, and making sure iTunes is the only real entry to shift to the device.

Still, when Apple updated the iPhone OS to firmware 3.0, adding functionality for iPhone peripherals into the mix, it was only a matter of time that we’d see an aftermarket SD card reader accessory… and here it is, ZoomIt.

Essentially, you plug the ZoomIt SD reader dongle into your iPhone or iPod Touch’s dongle connector, launch the free ZoomIt app and you’re free to shift any file supported by the OS to and from your device.

Of course, this isn’t really an expandable storage solution, but it wouldn’t be a bad way to backup photos from your camera while you’re on the road… and it should even work on the iPad. You can pre-order the ZoomIt now for $50, with a ship date in April.
