I have a quick question. I'm heading to Dublin in April to visit a friend and then I'm flying to Amsterdam for a few days with a trip to Keukenhof Gardens to see the tulips.
My question is this:
Should I have more than one lens? I have several lenses to choose from - 12-24mm, 55-200mm lens and the standard 18-55mm. I think I can get away with the 18-55mm lens, but I want to do some wide-angle shots of the tulip fields and canals, requiring the 12-24mm lens.
Any suggestions?
Hello Bonne, I am a professional photographer and my advice is to remember how heavy it is to carry around lens. If you can only pick one choose the 55 to 200. If you must have two 12-24.
Bonne... I started carying around my 18-200mm as the one for all lense. But I have considered getting the 12-24, since i love to do bldg/architecture stule photos. My 18mm does most of what I need with the great 200 zoom ability. But you probably will tend to do more wide than zoom id think. Unless you want to invest in one extra 18-200 combo (saves the 18-55 and 55-200) you probably will use the zoom less unless youre going for birds and gargoyals high up!
Mostly I'm with Tricia, those things are heavy! If the purpose of your trip is the pictures, I agree, take the long lense and the wide angle, but if not, I favor 1 lens and I love my 24-85. Flowers close up are better with the 12-24 of course, but again, what is your purpose. I've taken every combination and now take the medium and leave the rest home. I have great pictures and don't regret the ones I didn't get.
Bonne,
I've been travelling with a dSLR the last few years, as I found I wasn't able to get the results I wanted with a P&S Camera (limited zoom and wide angle range).
Although I usually travel with three Lenses (and a few other items), I've found that two are probably adequate. At the moment I'm using a 24-105 as my "walkabout" Lens and a 10-22 for wide-angle use; those seem to cover the majority of situations. I also pack a 70-300 but have found so far that I only use it occasionally. I've found that I've been using the WA Lens far more than I had anticipated.
My suggestion would be the 12-24 and either the 18-55 or the 55-200 (depending on what range you prefer to work with).
Good luck and happy travels!
