Hi,
just wondering what is the "preferred" way to call from Germany to NJ (USA). Last year we bought a pre paid phone card (ATT?) from home and the minutes went VERY fast. We used pay phones along the way to call home. Any advice?
Thank you.

Buy a phone card there. There is a section on French phone cards in the intro of my RS Paris guidebook, I'm sure there's one on German phone cards in a German guidebook, and I bet you can find info on this site. While I was in Paris, I got an iradium (brand) phone card to call the USA specifically, and it cost 7,50 euros, and I had literally hours to talk from a home phone in Paris. Less from a payphone I think, but still a lot. You will get better rates if you buy one there. Check your guidebook for German specifics.
Don't know where in Germany you will be, but some urban internet shops have "phone booths" for overseas calls, either the cabinet with door type, or voice-over-internet protocol systems--you can call for 15-25 eurocents/minute.
