Phone Cards and Cell Phone Question

I'm planning on using phone-cards throughout my five week stay in Europe because I'll be moving around a lot from country to country. I don't need an extensive amount of minutes either.

I just had a question. If I use my cell phone from the states [which works in Europe], will I be charged doubly? Once for the minutes used on the phone card, and again for minutes from the cell-phone? Or only for the phone card minutes? I'm on AT+T.

If I'll be charged twice for using my cell phone to access the calling card, I might as well find a land line to do so, right?

Ryan,

I've never tried the method you're suggesting, but I believe you will be "charged twice". If you're using your home Cell Phone in Europe, any time you make a call you'll be charged at whatever their applicable roaming rate is. Using the phone card will also deplete minutes from that.

You might check with AT&T to confirm that. I'm assuming you're not using a "smart phone" like the IPhone, where data roaming charges would be a concern?

No, I'm not using a smart-phone. I guess I won't be using my cell phone then.

What's the availability of public-use phones in major cities? Would hostels allow me to use a front-desk phone of some sort?

Ryan,

You can pick up a workable phone from ebay for as little as $20 including shipping. Then when you get to Europe, you can purchase an inexpensive SIM card (10 EUR). It will have some limited minutes preloaded. You can then buy a cheap international calling card to place calls.

There are various strategies around this issue if you do a forum search.

PM me if you want an ebay seller I have used.

When I was in the UK I picked up a Vodafone pay as you go SIM from Carphone Warehouse the SIM was free and I added a ten pound top up. It was 5p to call back to the US which isn't cheap but far cheaper than my ATT plan allowed, even with the international package. That could end up being cheaper I would just check and see what different companies offer. Having a phone was invaluable.

Ryan,

While you certainly could buy a Phone in the first country you visit, one important point to note is that while you might have cheap rates in that country, as soon as you move to another country you'll be "roaming" and the rates will increase.

If your present phone (AT&T?) is unlocked, you won't have to worry about buying a phone off E-Bay. Simply take your own phone and buy a SIM.

One possibility you might consider would be to purchase a SIM card from one of the "travel phone" firms such as Roam Simple, Call in Europe, Cellular Abroad, Mobal or Telestial and use that with your phone. That will provide consistent rates throughout most of western Europe, regardless of which country you're in. Have a look at their respective websites so that you have a clear idea of the rate structures and terms.

I'll also be "moving around a lot from country to country" this time. After much research and consideration, I've decided to use a SIM from one of the above firms for my trip this year. So far I've found their service to be excellent (setting up the account was completed very easily and professionally, and the SIM was delivered in one day via FED EX).

Using a travel SIM this year is a bit of an "experiment" to see how my costs differ vs. roaming with my home network as I have in the past (I keep very complete records of my trip costs on an Excel sheet). If you want further details on the method I'll be using this year, send me a PM.

Cheers!
