Ho Gordon, We can HIGHLY recommend the Pension Mayringerlehen in Ramsau, 10 min. from Berchtesgaden. We stayed here in '06, '07 and '09. Our favorite place to stay anywhere. www.mayringerlehen.de www.worldisround.com/articles/355548/index.html Just outside of Rothenberg we can also recommend the Landgasthof zum Rappen. Stayed here in '07. www.romanticroad.com/zumrappen/ In Fuessen we stayed twice ('01 and '03) at the Hotel zum Hechten. www.hotel-hechten.com Paul

I highly recommend the Rheinhotel in St. Goar, but only if you can get the room with the central balcony. And if you go, have the owner cook for you. He is a trained chef and perpares fantastic meals. Also, Hotel Uhland in Munich is very nice. It's in a quiet neighborhood about a 10 min walk (or less) from the main train station.

Would definitely recommend Pension Malerwinkel in Bacharach. Very quiet location - not near the train tracks. Young couple own the property and are more than happy to take you to and from train station if you don't feel like walking - it's not very far though. Have a lovely garden area to sit and enjoy a wonderful bottle of Rhine Wine.

Hi Gordon, The Pension Mayringerlehen is less than 10 minutes from Berchtesgaden. The Guesthouse Friedwiese is 3 minutes from Berchtesgaden. Paul

Thanks Paul for your recommendations. Both pension Mayringerlehen and www.friedwiese.de/enska/isl.htm look like good places to stay with very reasonable prices. A question if I do not have a car are both walkable to Berchtesgaden or are there buses to train station in Berchtesgaden. Thanks for all your help.

Hi Gordon, There is a train/bus station in Berchtesgaden. I know that the bus from Berchtesgaden station goes to Ramsau and the Mayringerlehen. Actually, the owner/host of the Mayringerlehen (Sabine Grassl) says the bus stop in Ramsau is only a 3 minute walk to the Mayringerlehen. The Friedweise, I'm not sure, but if interested, you could write to Helga Eder (owner/host of the Friedwiese). She'd be glad to assist and answer any questions you may have. Paul

Just a comment about your drive on Day 3 through Karlruhe/Heidelberg to R.o.d.T. It's a Friday, it will take you longer than 3 hours, plan accordingly. Don't drive through the area during rush hour.

What time is the rush hour times? Will traffic be just as heavy on the 10th June which I understand is a holiday?

Hi Gordon, Sorry to hear that the Mayringerlehen is booked. I hope the Friedwiese has something available. Those are the only two places we can personally recommend in the area. We've heard that the Gasthof-Pension Gebirgshaeusl is nice. We've only been to their restaurant, which is our favorite in the area. This is located on the same road as the Mayringerlehen (B305) and is between the Mayringerlehen and Berchtesgaden, meaning it's only a few minutes from Berchtesgaden. www.gebirgshaeusl.de/index.php?de_willkommen Good luck. Hi Gordon, I just booked a room at Haus Heidi in Berchtesgaden. I chose her place out of the the Berchtesgaden TI book for it's location...short walk to the town center, and that it is a small B & B (8) rooms at a great price. I then read a nice review of it on Bavarian Ben's website. Just a thought for another option for you. www.berchtesgaden.de/de/haus-heidi-schoenau
