Penzion and Sobe. And a 3-yr old.

I am making a trip to Croatia and Slovenia this Fall and I keep reading about penzions and sobes. I understand a sobe is an individual room in a house which may or may not have a private bathroom. Is a sobe with its own bath a good idea for a family with a 3-yr old?

And what is a penzion? How does it differ from a hotel or an apartment?

In your opinion, what's the best mode of accommodation when travelling with a 3-yr old?

Thanks,
D

Depending on how much you plan on moving about the country, with a family and a 3 year old, I would think an apartment would be better suited for your situation. You'll have your privacy, you won't share a bathroom and you have access to amenities like a kitchen and possibly a washer/dryer. Whether it's the best value, only you can answer as we don't know your budget, how long you'll be on your trip and how often you'll be changing locations.

Never been to Croatia, but would venture to say a penzion is similar to a pensione. Meaning it's a small, mom and pop-owned guesthouse type accommodation. It won't have all the amenities you might find at a big hotel, it may or may not include breakfast, and the rooms may or may not have private bathrooms.

You may also want to look into hostels. Many hostels now offer family rooms - and some hostels do have rooms that have an ensuite bathroom so you don't need to share. Hostels can give you access to a basic kitchen if you don't want to eat out all the time, and many have laundry facilities.

Hi Dukkar,

We mostly stayed in sobes when we were in Croatia and Slovenia and as you mentioned they are typically a room in a home--sometimes a small room with or without a bath. It mostly worked well for us as they were inexpensive but not sure that there would be room for more than 2 people.

Your family might be more comfortable in a hotel room with the possibility of an extra cot or bed.

Here are some great articles on this site about traveling in Croatia and Slovenia--it also has to links to some info about hotels:

We've only stayed in hotels when we've been to Slovenia (3 times in 18 months). In the off season we go to thermal spas. My 2 year old loves the pools.
Another option with a kid is to try a farm stay. I have friends who did this for spring break. We're doing a farm stay in a week, but in Germany not Slovenia. Here is a link to a list of the farms: http://www.slovenia.info/?_ctg_namestitev=0&CF=ROOT2&title=Accommodation

Also apartments are pretty common in slovenia. A lot of Europeans vacation there to ski, use the thermal resorts, or go to the beach. There are often vacation apratment villages in that ares.

My opnion (so far) as to what type of accomidations work best with a toddler...I'm leaning toward an apartment. When chooseing one make sure that you look at the pictures and check for breakable things.
