Pension

Can anyone tell me what a "Pension" is? Is it some type of hotel? Thanks

Yes. More informal than a hotel. Usually larger than a B&B. Often with shared toilet. A good choice for the frugal traveler many believe. Take it seriously. Also, Google pension or go to wikipedia for more info. And put in the name of the pension and you might google some info on that particular one.

It can vary a bit between countries, but often the only difference is that a pension lobby is on the second floor, otherwise quite like a hotel. That has been my experience in urban France and Austria.

But in Switzerland and rural Austria, the pension is more like a guesthouse.

So the exact definition will be in the eye of the owner, so you may want to check on the specific property to be clear about what to expect.
