Paying for Guides in Spain

I am arranging a trip in San Sebastian with a recommended guide from Rick Steeve's Spain 2012 travel book, Gorilla-trip.com. The guide is asking for my Passport # in order to invoice me for the trip. I do not see a need to give this number out to him. Is the need for a passport # standard procedure? Thanks, Don Z.

I have had to supply my passport/passport number for a number of other things but never a guide but probably looking for some identification. The passport number doesn't mean much so I would give it to him. It is not like a credit card number which is far more useful.

If you don't feel comfortable - don't send the info! It may be their method of security though......we were asked to show our passports along with credit cards for purchases all over Spain. Enjoy your trip!

Get used to it, Don. Every hotel in Spain will ask to see your passport and will record the number - it's a requirement. I also had to show my passport in order to buy a SIM card for my phone. The number is meaningless to anyone for any other purpose.
