Passport validity- Schengen Area 3 or 6 months?

Taking our kids (both US citizens) to Switzerland, Germany and Italy for spring break. Their passports expire 3 months and 13 days after we return. The State Department website in some places says 6 months validity after return date is required, and in some places it says 3 months (sometimes on the same page e.g. the Switzerland Country Information Page). We are flying United and Lufthansa. United told us 3 months was fine. Lufthansa declined to answer and said check with the governments. Swiss government websites seem to indicate 3 months, but then there's the US DoS which has me uncertain, as well as several forum posts that indicate it's most likely an airline employee who would make an issue of it.

Benefits to waiting to renew: If they can travel on their current ones, we save application and expedite fees in the short-term (so more for the trip), and we can renew after my daughter turns 16 when she can get a 10 year passport.

Drawbacks to waiting to renew: My anxiety, lol. I would only wait if we can be confident we won't have any issues. Is anyone able to offer any confirmation on the validity requirements and likelihood we might face issues? And if you encounter a mis-informed airline employee, what are the odds of successfully convincing them your documents are fine?

Most would just suggest renewing and expediting the renewals.

If you have questions, the people you really want to talk to is the airline you are flying. There should be a link on their website regarding documents, that typically leads to their policy, or a link to a database to enter your information and get an answer. The reason the airline is the one to ask is that they are responsible for verifying your passport before you check-in/board your flight to Europe. If they deny you boarding, you do not go, it does not matter if you will or will not have a problem with immigration there.

You can also go here: https://www.iatatravelcentre.com/ There is a link where you can enter detailed information, and it will indicate if your passport is OK. I would treat this as, if they point out a problem, you have a problem, if it indicates you are OK, still contact your airline to verify.

You have identified the issues; if the gate agent does not let her board what do you do?
How much could you loose on prepaid reservations/cost?

The cost of an expedited renewal is what percentage of the total trip cost?

...we save application and expedite fees in the short-term (so more for the trip), ...can renew...when she can get a 10 year passport...

The amount of money you'll save is miniscule compared to the overall cost of the trip. Not to mention the possibility of not being allowed to board the aircraft and ruining the trip. Remember the old adage "Penny wise and pound foolish". Don't mean to sound snarky, just offering food for thought.

Thanks, everyone. We ended up deciding to eliminate any chance of we’d have an issue and submitted new applications by walk-in today. Paid to expedite so hopefully will have them back in hand in plenty of time for the trip and one less detail to worry about. :)

I think that will alleviate your stress (it would for me!). Come back and let us know how long the process took! Lots of people are looking at renewing right now.
