Passport renewals. Anything new or different we should do?

My wife and me have passports expiring prior to our next trip to Europe.

I have heard of a fast pass and possibly other things that are now available. Like TSA pre check and Global something or other.

It seems very confusing

So, as we get ready to renew our passports, is there anything different we need to do for renewing our passports and/or anything additional that might make our travels easier?

If possible, give details of how and where to handle and what options and costs there are.
Thanks

TSA Precheck and Global Entry are completely separate from your passport renewal. You will need your new passport to apply for either, so go ahead and start on that, and then you have time to investigate whether the other programs might be of interest to you. Both cost money and an application process. Global Entry includes Precheck but the reverse is not true.

TSA Pre is a designation on your boarding pass that gives you access to a special line at security, only within the US. You can leave your shoes and light jacket on, and your liquids and computer stay in your luggage. Generally the line is much shorter, but--- not every airport in the US has the special line.

Global Entry is used when you re-enter the US---you have access to dedicated kiosks, again with shorter lines. But not all airports have those either.

Do your research for Pre-Check and Global Entry programs. Pre-Check costs $85 while Global Entry costs $100, but includes Pre-Check. Enrollment is for five years, both. I am very pleased with Global Entry. Kiosks are available in quite a number of airports and most certainly all the ones I have used and will ever use upon returning to the U.S.

Only thing different about renewing passport is that they cost more and are thicker.
