Don't need expedited service, but don't remember how long it took the last time we renewed with regular processing by mail. One place on the State Dept. site indicates regular processing is 6 to 8 weeks, another indicates 4 to 6 weeks, and yet another indicates 15-18 working days. Has anybody renewed by mail with regular processing lately and if so how long did it take? Many thanks.
I mailed my renewal, using regular processing, at the end of January and received my new passport within 4-5 weeks. Not sure of the average turnaround time this spring, but I planned for it to take the maximum amount of time, plus a cushion of a few more weeks, to make sure that I would have it before I needed it for my latest trip. Hope this helps!
took me a month as well, but I would count on two, just to be safe.
Back in 2015 I received my passport in 8 days. However, that was 2 years ago and State is increasingly issuing record numbers of passports. Here's a Chicago Tribune article on the topic -- http://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/travel/ct-record-year-for-processing-us-passport-applications-20170517-story.html
Here are a few interesting numbers -- https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/statistics.html
I renewed earlier this year and while I did not track the time it seemed to be pretty fast. I think it was around a month for me to get my new passport.
I did mine in mid January. No expedited service and the from the time I dropped it off at the post office until the new one arrived was 11 days. I was pretty shocked.
I just renewed by mail a couple of months ago and it took less than 3 weeks from when I mailed in in, to when it came in the mail.
We did it in December without expedited processing and had them in less than 2 weeks.
I renewed mine in March and I think it came in just over 3 weeks. My kids got theirs (first time) in 4 weeks.
We renewed ours at the local post office and it took about three weeks.
They've been doing good lately. They had a giant backlog back in 2007 or so, when CBP started requiring passports for crossing land borders (Canada and Mexico). You needed to plan for a long wait or pay for expedited service then. My last renewal was in 2010. Maybe it's because I live close to DC but mine came back in under two weeks.
It's good to plan for longer, just to be safe, but it will probably come back much sooner than they're suggesting.
Our last renewal was fairly quick but don't count either. Since we always renew between 6 and 9 months out, the amount of time to renew is not critical. Are you on a short time line?
We renewed ours this spring and it only took three weeks or a little less. Just the regular service.
Thanks to all for your input. I now have a pretty good feel for the amount of time need.
just got my new passport. Took almost exactly 4 weeks.
Thanks Toni -- Good to know.
