There is a good chance I will be travelling to Belgium in the next 3 weeks to accompany an older friend to see her terminally ill brother. My passport expired 5 days ago! Anyone know of a credible expediting company. I am in TN-not near a regional office.

I think you have to do it through a post office or some other government office. You can also renew it by mail.

Sarah, you can get expedited service through the State Dept directly if you are traveling within two weeks. Apply for your renewal by mail, requesting expedited service. Warning, it will cost you! There are instructions on the website about what to do if you get within the two-week window. I just renewed mine without expediting, and it took four weeks and two days.

I've had great experience with Travel Document Systems, although I've used the San Francisco office, being on the West Coast. I assume you'd use the DC office.

I use them for work, and routinely have international destinations and express service issues. You'll need to express mail your expired passport to them, and they'll express it back when renewed. If it's any consolation, the quickest way to get a passport renewed is at the last minute (although it costs more, of course).
