Just had to let you know it is possible. I got my new passport back just 12 days after the old one was mailed in (with the appropriate documents) for renewal. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to get it back in less than 2 weeks.
This pleases me. My renewal is on day 10. Although, I notice you might get your mail faster. I'll see...
Update: Day 13: passport renewal received!
it sounds like you paid the $6O to have it expedited which is 2 to 3 weeks.
I did not ask for or pay for expedited service.
I had a similar rapid renewal of mine last fall, also not paying for expedited service.
I just renewed my passport and my husband's passport. Mailed September 5th in separate envelopes. Received both new passports in the mail on the same day, 15 day later. I did not pay extra. My passport did not expire until next July and my next overseas visit is scheduled for July 2018. I just thought I would get a head start and get my passport done before the rush.
Not really surprising, this would be the slowest time of the year for passport renewals.
Yep, got mine back on day 13 after they received it w/out paying for the faster service & the older/voided one back the day after.
I got my kids passports for the first time a couple months ago and it only took them like 3 weeks to arrive! I about fell out of my chair, I was so shocked! Didn't pay for expedited either!
Twelve days for my passport renewal..am very pleased. Good window of opportunity now.
This is not the same situation as the others who responded but I got a new passport in less than two hours. My original passport was lifted when I was visiting Dublin last year. Fortunately my hotel was one block from the US Embassy. So I enter the embassy at around 7:30 with a passport photo in hand, fill out some paperwork, pay the folks $75 for the passport plus $60 for expedited service, and walk out of the building at 9:30 after getting a lecture on why I should keep my passport in the hotel room rather than carrying it with me.
This happened to me and I also did not pay for expedited service.
The way I see it, since I didn't need my passport immediately, it was processed quickly. If I really needed it within 2 weeks, that kind of speed probably never would have happened. :-)
What Continental said -- you can often get a renewal in a short time, but you can't count on that if you NEED it fast (renewals best done off-season!)
Not a renewal, but I got my daughter's passport within 2 weeks of the application. I teased her that it helps to not have a past.
Mine was very quick renewal too.
My only panic was that I had to wait a couple weeks longer to get my old passport back. I really wanted it because it has some really pretty Visa Stamps and is a great reminder of my travels.
BUT - I did eventually get my old one back.
Same time frames twice this year with my daughter, first for a renewal, and then when she (thought) she lost it.
As for the return of my old passport full of visa stamps and one still valid visa, well, it arrived the day after my freshly minted passport hit my hands.
About 8 years ago there was an expansion of passport requirements for crossing US land borders; it created a huge backlog. Now that backlog is gone and whatever changes they made to meet the demand seem to have really speeded the process. These days it seems like regular speed is the old expedited speed.
