Just wanted to report that I just got my passport back in the mail after applying online 10 days ago to have it renewed. I am so encouraged that they got it done so quickly! It shipped to me from Chicago. It costs $130….the hardest part was making certain my picture I sent on my phone had a white or gray background wall!
Jane,
Seconding. I had the same problem with the photo, but they accepted it. I just got my new passport a week after ordering it online.

Jane & Mike, did your Passport Card (assuming) come separately? If so, how long after? I could not find a FAQ for this at the State.gov website.
I did not get a passport card, just renewed my passport.
My passport card came separately when I renewed over the summer.
Thanks HK.
Yes, its amazing now. Got my wifes in 7 days.
I am unable to apply online until March. I have my photo on my desktop and hope that it will be accepted. That seems to be a a problem for some.
Good to hear. I have a trio of international trips in the upcoming 3 months that is making it a puzzle for me to figure out when best to renew my passport which expires in the spring. It's good for my trip next week, but not good for the January or February trips even though it will still have a few months of validity. I plan to submit my online renewal the day I return from this 1st trip. The rules about how long the passport has to be good beyond its expiration are a trial for me every 10 years. I guess it's a good problem to have...
As regards passport cards: what's the point? Serious question.
The passport card can be used for entry to Canada or Mexico by land or sea, but not flying. Maybe it’s easier for some folks who enter either country frequently (maybe truckers? Or people who live close to a border and go back and forth regularly?) to carry the card rather than the passport “book,” but for flying to Europe, the card’s not going to help. I received a card in addition to my regular passport, but the card got stashed in a drawer and has never been used.
I got the passport card because I foresee driving to Canada every couple of years (and have already used it once since I got it about six months ago). For the small extra cost, it also seems reasonable to have it as another form of ID to use when a passport book or drivers license isn’t specifically needed. I can absolutely live without it, but decided it might be nice.
