traveling from Volterra to Florence, need some help as to where to park to avoid ztl tickets. Staying at hotel in ztl for two nights, hotel is no help, have gps (has been a life saver so far) so looking for a place to plug in the location
Here's a link to a TripAdvisor article that explains why having a rental car in Florence, while sleeping in a hotel within the ZTL, will be a challenge: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187893-c145503/Tuscany:Italy:Parking.In.Florence.html And here's a link to an interactive map showing the location of the ZTL's: https://ztl.comune.fi.it/tzi/index.jsp You mentioned your GPS: travelers to Florence have reported here in the past that their GPS did not help them avoid the ZTLs; the ZTL's are enforced by automatic cameras at the ZTL borders, it photos your license as you drive by, checks to see if that license is authorized to be in the ZTL, and if it's not, you get a $150 ticket in the mail, several months after you return, for every time you made an incursion into the ZTL. Another souvenir of your visit to Florence.
We stayed in one of Rick's suggested hotels downtown. Overall I didn't like the arrangement. The hotel wasn't that nice, the food and nightlife downtown wasn't especially wonderful and we paid extra for the location. In theory, your hotel can get you in and out of the ZTL without a ticket. I'm not sure I trust that it will get done enough to risk it. We parked our leased car in an underground parking lot about a mile north of the hotel and hoofed in from there to avoid the ZTL. A GPS will guide you to parking but I'm not sure they are programmed to avoid ZTLs. Next time I would stay somewhere a little further out, with a bus line into downtown and free parking . It might be preferable to not have a car for your days in Florence.
