We wish to go on gondolas to Schilthorn, First and Jungfraujoch. We will have a car and were wondering where to start these trips ? (We presume we can save some cost by driving closer to these destinations.)
We have 4 children - is there a family ticket ?
There is a large car park by the gondola station in the valley.
thanks
David, to go to the Jungfraujoch, you will need to depart from the Lauterbrunnen train station. There is limited parking there but you may be able to find parking nearby.
To go the the Schilthorn, there are two ways. One again from the Lauterbrunnen train station and the other from Stechelberg which is about 3-4 miles farther into the valley. On either, you end up in Muerren for the trip up to the Piz Gloria. There is a very large parking lot for your car at Stechelberg.
If you have trouble getting parking in Lauterbrunnen, park in the Stechelberg parking lot and take the post bus from Stechelberg to the Lauterbrunnen train station. The bus pulls into the gondola station and runs every 30 minutes back into Lauterbrunnen. Bus fare is about CHF7 (Swiss Francs only). You can buy the tickets on the bus from the driver (we did).
Larry,
Could you clarify the last paragraph of your reply? As you stated, one can park and board the Gondola at Stechelberg for the trip to Gimmelwald / Murren / Birg / Schilthorn. I'm not sure why it would be necessary to return to Lauterbrunnen via the Post Bus for this trip? I'm just curious, as perhaps I'm missing something here.
David,
check Rick's books for information on the parking arrangements at Stechelberg. It's a large lot so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a spot (however no guarantees), but I can't recall if there were any charges.
Cheers!
Ken and David, I was pointing out that if parking was not avaiable in Lauterbrunnen, the car could be parked in the large parking lot at Stechelberg. For the Schilthorn, you are at the gondola station and up you go. For the Jungfraujoch, you are not as you must depart from the Lauterbrunnen train station. My point was to leave the car at Stechelberg if parking was a problem in Lauterbrunnen and take the local bus to the train station. Of course, if there is parking at the train station or near by, you can drive there and avoid the bus.
Larry, thanks for the clarification. I was just referring to the trip to the Schilthorn, and hadn't addressed the other location.
Cheers!
