Time of year makes a difference. In October, we followed signs in Sienna to parking near a football field. In Lucca, it was easy to find parking, most parking spaces were open. I got a TomTom GPS after this trip (because of this trip). The TomTom has "navigate to - point of interest - near your destination - parking" that will help you go straght to a parking lot. If it's full, you can choose the next one.

We have parked at the garage on south end of the old city center more than one occasion. I believe the access is from Via di Fontanella. It is easy to get to by car and just a simple 5-min. walk from the area that you most want to see as a tourist. One nice thing about this garage is that when you are tired of walking around, you have a downhill walk to your car, not uphill.
