Paris, Venice,???, Back to Paris for flight home

Regretfully and cannot change, we have flights arriving and departing Paris fora June 10-21 trip. Currently, we are 10-13th Paris, late afternoon flights to Venice on the 13th, Venice 13-15th and then we will have 5 days for travel and visiting another location. Our flight leaves early am in Paris so we are hoping to be back in Paris for a good night rest on the 20th. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I am spent researching for ideas.

We are a family of 5 adults and do not mind train travel but don't want to spend all our time traveling.

I thought about Muerren but will we have time?

Another option is going to Milan or Geneva. Seems simple but not as exciting as Florence or Cinque Terre.

We even thought about flying out of Venice to a nice beach resort to relax but have no idea where would be reasonable with our allotted time.

Thanks for all your ideas and assistance!

Yes, Murren is absolutely do-able from Venice...I do it every June. Venice San Lucia -> Milano Centrale -> Interlaken Ost -> Murren. It's about 6.5 hours from Murren -> Paris. Don't know how early your "early" flight from Paris actually is, but I would much rather spend the night somewhere in downtown Paris rather than the airport if at all possible,

Thanks for the info. A question about trains...when you purchase the ticket from Venice to Murren, is it possible to stay overnight in Milan with the same ticket or do we have to purchase 2 separte tickets...Venice to Milan ..stay one night...ticket Milan to Murren. I think I read somewhere that I have to purchase the first part from Italy trains and 2nd part from Swiss but do not actually have to change trains until Interlaken Ost?
Thank you again for the information!

Umm...you have left out some really critical information.

What are your actual departure and arrival dates? You said things like your "trip" is June 10-21....you are in Paris 10-13... when you describe your dates like this, it may be unrealistic or not honest with yourself. By that I mean: when does your inbound flight arrive in Paris (and where is that coming from - from London, or Los Angeles?). These details make a huge difference. It's not clear if you will have one day in Paris, or three. If your longhaul flight arrives in Paris on June 10, and you're planning to depart for somewhere else on June 13th, then your entire plan is crazy and unrealistic - because your will be jetlagged, miserable, and you will not have a single, fully usable day in Paris. On the other hand, if your flight arrives on June 9, then you have about one or two usable days in Paris....which many people would say is a tragic mistake (unless you have no interest in Paris, or if you've been there many times before and have seen it all).

Have you been to Europe before? Have you been to Paris, or France, or Venice, or Italy before?

I ask because we see posts every day on this forum from people who have never been to Europe before who ignore the fact that:

  1. You will be exhausted on your arrival day from a long-haul flight, no matter what time your flight gets in, and for most people that day is spent jetlagged and miserable, just wanting to get some sleep. For many people, the next day - their first full day in Europe - is also somewhat compromised, but lets set that aside. You can't count your arrival day (or your departure day) as a usable day - it's not. Because...

  2. It takes time - more time that most people think - to simply pick up and move form one city to another. If you're VERY efficient (experienced) and you travel by train from one city center to another, that may consume just a half-day at best, but in many cases (especially if a flight is involved) it consumes most of a day. Plans like "Day 1: morning in Paris, fly to Venice, sightseeing in Venice" is not realistic - you see/experience neither.

If you are a veteran traveler, if you've been to these places before, then it may be reasonable to plan a trip that gives you just a day or two in Paris....but for most people that's going to be heart-breaking. If you are planing like this, you will have no time to actually be anywhere and see anything, you will always be moving and all you will see/experience is airports, train stations and hotels (briefly).

So...I'd suggest you start your question over. Provide details like when you arrive and when you depart (and have you been there before, plus what kind of things you like to do/see)....otherwise any advice about logistics will be meaningless.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thank you David for your posting. We are experienced travelers (former flight attendant) and have been to Paris and southern France. We pack light and will be arriving in Paris from Iceland around 1 pmontbe 10th with plans to drop off luggage at hotel and meet up with a friend to walk sights with our kids (never been to Paris) and have an early dinner before retiring. 11,12,&13 will be for sightseeing. My kids were not too interested in Paris but for a few things to see. Off to Venice on a late night flight so we will do Venice the 14th and part of 15th. New to Venice and have been advised by most friends that 2 days is sufficient for a quick look see. Most have encouraged me to hit cinque terra or muerren as we are a very active family and love outdoor adventures. I'm thinking to train out to Florence for the 15,16 and then train to cinque terra for 17-20 for the hiking. I know it's a quick, whirlwind trip but it's intent was to just get my kids there. Being on the move so much will hit us when we return home 😬 But it's what we do. Trying to fulfill 5 individual desires is exhausting but doable I feel. Thank you again. Please comment if you have feelings toward another location in lieu of the Florence/cinque terra option. I'm open to suggestions but our flight into Paris on the 10th and out on the 21st are not changeable as well as our one way to Venice on the 13th.

Best use of time indicates you should fly to Paris from Pisa, preferably on the 19th as it is a late afternoon flight on easyJet. They go to Orly. You could do it on the 20th, but any hiccup like a flight cancellation and no way to get back to Paris in time for morning flight on the 21st. That'll give you another full day in Paris.

Just some general comments -- Venice is an incredible place and I would say that a day and a half is not enough time. I have found that people that do not like Venice tend to stay near the Piazza San Marco - that area is overrun with tourists who pack into the square after getting off a cruise ship. They may make it a short distance over to the Rialto bridge for a photo opp. The REST of Venice is so beautiful and special. Save the Rialto and San Marco for VERY early in the morning or late at night (after 8), when the magic returns. I highly recommend a rowing lesson with Row Venice - one of our favorite vacation activities anywhere.
Cinque Terre in June -- hmmmm. While I love (LOVE) the Cinque Terre, I don't think I would go in June. It has become VERY crowded - no longer the "back door" it once was. July is probably worse, but I am sure the crowds will be tremendous.
Muerren sounds really nice but since I haven't been (yet), I can't advise.
If you are up for flying, would you consider a beach in Spain? Maybe Majorca? Or - better yet - maybe fly to Rome or Naples from Venice and spend a few days on the Amalfi Coast? Then you could catch a flight from Rome to Paris?
