Paris pre-paid cell phones?

My daughter and I are on T-Mobile, which has a reasonable international plan: no extra charge, and 99 cents per minute, Europe to US. My mother's Cingular plan is a complete rip-off: $5.95 per month with a mandatory 12 month sign-up period, AND after that - calls are $1.99 per minute! Cinglar also wants to charge her $40 to unlock her phone. Crazy. So I will be taking my cell but my mother won't, but we want the security of having her have a cell for the two-week period we will be there. Can one buy a cheap French pre-paid phone in France? If so, what's an approximate rate, and where can you buy one of these?

Thanks--

Make sure your phone works in Europe!! Cell phones in Europe work on GSM 900 or 1800. The US has different frequency.

When I went to London, I got one on Ebay for about $25. It works great! Make sure the cell phone is UN-LOCKED and you will need to get a SIM chip. The SIM chip on ebay cost about $2 and there's plenty of brands like Vodafone, Virgin MObile, O2, Orange, etc.

I am not sure what the common brand is in France, but you can go to any mobile phone store and get a SIM.

In Italy my sister got a prepaid phone for $99 and got it in Milan. So you do not have to get one before leaving, but for me, I wanted one in my hands beforehand.
