Where should we go for a week in August? Husband and I have been to Paris, though it's been decades. Kids (13 and 17) have never been. None of us have been to Stockholm.
Of course you should go to Stockholm! But then again, I might be a bit biased…
Joking aside, they are two very different cities in many ways. What are you looking for in this trip?
Stockholm is nice, but you can see the city in 3-4 days, while Paris you can spend a week and not see everything important.
If you go to Stockholm, do not miss the Vasa Museum. Also, I suggest taking in more of Sweden than Stockholm.
Check out what you haven't seen in Paris and compare with what you would see in Sweden.
If you haven't been to Scandinavia, Denmark and Norway are great. Norway's fjords are amazing and best seen on a cruise. It is one of the most scenic places that I have every seen.
That's kind of like asking, should I have boeuf bourguignon or gravlax with dilled potatoes for dinner? They're both great, but in very different ways. All else equal, I would choose Stockholm, because Scandinavia is at its best in August which is not the case with Paris (although still fine to visit then).
Ask your kids where they want to go, let them "research" it first...given the choice and dates, I could flip a coin for myself and win, but try to see this one through the eyes of your teens.
I would add that you have a better chance at comfortable temps in Stockholm in August. And since none of you have been to Stockholm, in your shoes, I would probably lean towards Stockholm, or I would flip that proverbial coin that will be a winner no matter what comes up.
Twenty years ago I took my teens to Stockholm in August and they loved it. But they also loved Paris...if your teens are inquisitive and open to new experiences and food, you can't lose with either option.
All the answers mean there are no losers with Stockholm or Paris.
I personally prefer Budapest.
If these are the choices, then it's Paris, obviously.
If you don't mind the heat, expect Paris to be hot, if not a broiler at times. Regardless, I've spent several visits in Paris in August, if not July.
If you are factoring weather in your final decision, then presumably Stockholm would be cooler.
