Paris Food

How about some great places to eat in the area of the Eiffel Tower and in the Rue Cler area. Sit down ,take out , a bakery or just the best place for a glass of wine, all ideas are welcome.

If you haven't already, you should get the latest copy of Rick's Paris guidebook. He lists lots of good restaurants. Of course they will be crowded with Americans, because his recommendations are very popular. I like the Cafe du Marche and Tribecca on rue Cler. There is a great pastry shop there also, but you will find many great ones all over town, as well as restaurants. It's nice to have recommendations but when you are out and about around town seeing the sights, getting to them is often not a priority, and you just have to select a place where you are. In several experiences in Paris, I haven't had a bad meal -- I've enjoyed some more than others, but none were bad.

Lee, some times the best restaurant is one you find on your own. All restaurants post the menu. Find one that has a good menu (or a great pre fixed one) and poke your head inside. If you see it has many customers, get a table.

I don't recall any restaurant in the Eiffel area we liked.... but we found a place that we could "see" the tower from our table!

All bakeries in Paris are good... haven't found a bad one yet. Same rule applies... find a crowded one, and you can't go wrong.

All Rick's suggested restaurants we tried were great. I will say I ate at Le P'tit Troquet twice.

One of the very big joys of Rue Cler, is just picking up a food at the boulangerie, fromagerie, etc. I would say just doing that can be an even better experience!

and those that have never done this are shocked...but those that know will agree...
some of the very best Chinese food I have ever had was on Rue Cler.

The crepe stand is yummy and you don't have to sit in the cafe, there's a bench across the street!

Finding good food in Paris is like finding sand on the beach. Even the hot dogs from the street vendors outside Notre Dame were incredible.

If you were to throw a rock anywhere in Paris you'd hit two excellent cafes and an exquisite bakery.
