This might qualify as a dumb question, but: We've used the Rick Steves Back Door Bags for quite a few trips now, yet I'm still puzzled about the best way to make use of the various pockets and compartments. Yes, my good clothes go in the main compartment - but how do people arrange things in the other ones? Inside the main space is the large fabric pocket. There's the half-height zippered pocket on the outside near the bottom. There's the strange full-depth pocket with the U-shaped zipper near the outside top. There's the small flat zippered pocket at the top. What's the best use for each of these? My choices always seem sort of random, and seem to vary from trip to trip. The only smart thing I've figured out is to draw a little map or diagram to remind me where I put what on the current trip. It saves me a little rummaging. Any better tips out there?
I like to use a small outside pocket at the top for my liquids bag, for easy access if TSA wants to see it. The outside half length pocket I use for a fleece jacket & rain shell for easy access in case I get cold or if it starts to rain. I put the jackets in a big zip-lock bags with the air squeezed out to fit smoothly. My little umbrella goes in either one.
