I'm planning a four day trip in late August and my plan is to pack light (just one carry on). The problem is that while the trip is during the dog days of summer, I will be playing an indoor winter sport during the trip. I don't need any special clothes for it-I just need to be warm. I feel like I'm going to end up needing to pack more than I'd like to cope with the hot and cold conditions during the trip. Any suggestions?
Perplexing problem. Try layers? Wear several of your short sleeved shirts under thick, long sleeved one. That way you don't have to pack so many long sleeved shirts. Also, I am warmer with light layers rather than one thick heavy one. There are shirts made from wicking material (e.g., coolmax) that keep you warm in winter/cool in summer.
Take some silk long underwear as a bottom layer. I took that with me to Seattle in March and it was great. It packs up very small. I bought mine at wintersilks.com
Usually layers with a fleece will be plenty. I carry about 15 pounds total in a convertible carry-on that gets me through a month of warm or cold.
Check it out and adjust to fit your style.
Dressing in layers makes good sense. You could always buy something extra while you are there, if you're stuck...Eliminate some of the stuff you brought on the way over to make it fit to carry home. Or give it away...
I'm not a fan of discarding clothes abroad but you could always do that if you were stuck.
