We will be spending one week in Amsterdam during January.
The weather appears to be in the 30's. Wondering if anyone has suggestions on the type of shoes to bring. Hopefully, we'll be doing alot of walking. We weren't sure if snow boots would be necessary or just walking/hiking boots would be fine. Thanks
Sometimes we get some snow flurries at night, but no need for snow boats (unless you are going somewhere outside of Amsterdam that you didn't mention). I would be more concerned that your shoes are waterproof and you have warm socks.
Just curious, why would you ask a question about Amsterdam on an Italian site????
Mark, this is the General Europe section, not the Italy section.
Be prepared for wet. On average Amsterdam rains about half the time. Water proof shoes and Gortex parka in addition to wool socks, wool or fleece sweater, knit cap and gloves should keep you pretty warm and dry.
As always dress in relatively light layers rather than one set of heavy clothes.
I spent 2 weeks in Amsterdam over Christmas many moons ago, and it was wet and relatively cold.Boots are very fashionable right now in Holland, and a great pair of warm ,medium heeled (repellant treated)leather boots would be perfect. Definately bring a mid weight jacket, as it can get nippy if the wind comes up. Definately plan to layer clothing.
Right now it is freezing in the Netherlands, just like many places right now. Everyone is ice-skating on the canals, and it sounds like so much fun, I want to go up there! The train drivers have complained that people are skating over the tracks to get from one canal to the next and need to be careful not to get hit by the trains. Also reports of tons of broken bones from ice skating accidents. So, pack some warm stuff and your ice skates!
