Yes, use the same rules. Make sure your car is big enough. Their sizes are very small compared to ours. We used a seven-passenger Renault scenic for me, spouse, 16, 12 and 8 year old with one carry on each (only largish day pack for 8 yr old). We were comfortable buy more luggage or bigger kids would have made it cramped.

I gave our kids the choice of a roll on or convertible carry on. Both 16 and 12 chose roll on and seemed happy with their choices. I gave them the same packing list we had but let them pick their stuff with a review before final packing.

Kids stuff is smaller, it's better to go lighter than feel you can add extras.

We are getting the Laguna, seems to be a bit bigger.
We plan on 4 bags total.

I absolutely agree with the other poster. Pack the same for the kids as yourself. Stores like Target carry wonderful kids tees by Champion 9 that are synthetic, easy to wash in a sink and will dry by morning. We have travelled this way since our child (now age 5) was an infant and it makes travel sooo much easier and relaxing. Making each person is responsible for their bag works well on our trips.

I just go back from a three week trip with a three year old and as a test I packed the same amount of clothes for him as for myself (and I strictly followed ETBD/one bag packing list.) I never felt that I was short clothes or that I should have brought more. (and we were in city, on farm, on beach). The only thing I did bring a bit more of was toys.
