Packing cubes for Osprey waypoint 65

I plan on traveling to Europe for two weeks and have been reading how easier it is to pack using packing cubes. What types would fit my waypoint 65 and what other necessities would I need?

I am not a fan of packing cubes either and will use gallon or two gallon zip lock bags for underwear, socks, and other items. For folded items that I want to keep wrinkle free, I use one packing envelope - medium size.

Packing cubes? Meh. Yes, it's useful to have some organizational structure for all the stuff in your bag (I particularly like to keep the dirty cloths sorted separate from the clean ones). But as others have pointed out, packing cubes are certainly not the only way to manage that. I use a handful small containers to keep various things sorted out, including a couple of the smaller-sized packing cubes, large ziplock bags, and other lightweight containers. Packing cubes do add a teeny extra bit of weight but not much - it's laudable to resist the urge to add even the smallest unneeded weight but honestly most people could probably cut weight more effectively by leaving out other stuff. They're not cheap, and they're not magical - just a container. If you have some, great, but I wouldn't worry about it if you don't - there are lots of alternatives. As for "other necessities" you might need - that's a large can of worms. Rick's books will have some advice on that, and you'll get a million other opinions.

Sam: I happen to really like my very very light weight packing cubes, which makes it easier for me to manage clothes, etc. Would they work in your pack? Dunno.

I'm one who loves packing cubes and definitely prefers them over ziploc bags. To each his/her own! I don't know why Rick's set or Magellan's wouldn't work for you; it really just depends on how much you pack in them and how pliable they are.

You will find some disagreement about the use of packing cubes. My wife and I don't use them for two reasons. They are extra weight, and they are extra weight. We use zipper lock bags for small items that we want segregated from our clothes. Some people like packing cubes, some don't. If it suits you, use them.

I'm in the packing cube camp. Things I carry but hope I don't need, I put in one cube. The next day's clothes I put in a cube. And so on. I find I switch around what I use them for as the trip progresses. Because the bags I use don't have lots of pockets, it makes it easy to find things because they aren't all jumbled together. It also makes unpacking at each stop easier: just pull out your cubes. As for weight, Eagle Creek actually sells some cubes that weight less than an ounce (look for the ones in "Silnylon Ripstop"). I do use zip lock bags for some things such as liquids, but they just aren't as convenient to me and don't pack as easily as the cubes. This really is a matter of personal preference though. You'll only know for sure by trying them out versus the alternatives.

I always use packing cubes too. I roll all my clothes, line them up in the cube, and then can always find a particular item without disrupting the others. I like the Rick Steves cubes ... use one large one for all of my clothing (tops, bottoms, fleece, etc.) and one small one for underwear, swimsuit, socks, etc. Packing is a cinch: put in the big cube, put in the small one, add shoes, toiletries bag, a stuff sack with electronics gear, and I'm off!

I use compression bags and packing cubes.......and I use them together! Imagine that. The compression allows me to stuff my winter wardrobe into the cubes.....the cubes allow me to keep an organized shape in my bag. i have the osprey porter 65 (I think 65). It is a rectangular bag so the rectangular cubes fit in nicely. I know the wayward bag is curved a bit, so I am not sure if that would limit a perfect fit for cubes.

Sam - I'm part of the camp that uses packing cubes (the additional 12oz, is execptable to me). I find that they help me with organizing my bag. As far as the types that would fit you bag, check out the 3 piece packing cube set at ebags.com.

I always use packing cubes. They are a good way to organize your bag, plus you can just lift the cubes out of the bag and stick them in a drawer or whatever when you get to your hotel. I don't remove the items unless I am using them. That makes it very easy to repackage when you are ready to move on. I don't know what will fit in your specific bag. I like the cubes that are sold on this website. I also have a couple of Eagle Creek cubes. I think they are slightly heavier if that is a concern. The EC cubes come in many more sizes and configurations than the RS cubes. If you have a travel store nearby I suggest you take your bag there, see what they have and determine what fits the best.

I use packing cubes for smaller items, not for my clothing. I've found it takes up a lot less room without the cubes for all my stuff. I have 1/2 cubes that are great for all my electronic cords for phone, ipad, adapter, etc. I use one for my make up. I might use one for my undies/socks. Zip lock bags would work, but they aren't as sturdy at the packing cubes. I packed once for a European trip using the cubes, and I found they "swelled" each time I unpacked and repacked them. Read that to mean I had to take extra time repacking them in the hotel. I do like the cubes, but they work for me organizing smaller items.

DH loves the packing cubes (Eagle Creek) and I typically use the Eagle Creek Pack-It and store shirts and dresses in it. Both are lightweight, make everything neat and tidy, and no wrinkles!

Yep, I'm a die hard fan of packing cubes, and think RS's ( his set is currently on sale for 14.39 ) are well worth the investment, and add very little weight ( 7 ozs ). Even with the cubes( and I use the entire set of three ), my bag still weighs only 16 lbs fully packed. It's a personal preference, only you will be able to decide if they are "right" for you or not....

Packing cubes will fit any shape you'd like - stuff 'em inside a plastic Easter egg, if you like. So, they're great for oddly-shaped bags, even when self-imposed - like when you purchase that 'thingy' that takes up alot of room in your bag ;-) NOT that I know anything about that... The selling point for me over Ziplocs is that you can open a cube completely - there's a 'hinged' lid as in a suitcase, whereas you have to slide things into a plastic bag. Not a major problem, but a great convenience for me. Also, they 'breathe'. If I'm checking luggage, I make sure to pack anything precious to me inside a plastic bag - things break (including that poorly-packed bottle of wine in the suitcase stacked on top of yours) and it's been known to rain - HEAVILY - on those tarmacs ;-) I also use approx. 748 Ziploc bags when packing, also, and bring extras for picnic items, collecting tickets, etc. See-through plastic bags are good for electronics - TSA and their foreign counterparts can easily see what that tangle of wires is. And by "what other necessities would I need", what are you referring to?
