Packing Birth Control

I'm too embaressed to ask anyone who would know the answer to this question (i.e. my dad, or some older suit who travels regularly), so I'll ask here!

So I'm traveling to Europe for 2 months...I've been packing my toiletry bag and I've noticed that bringing my boxes of birth control is taking up a lot of room. Can I just bring the blister packs to save room, or do I need to bring the box that states that they are prescribed to me? I'e afraid of being hauled off my security thinking that I'm secretly smuggling ecstacy or something because I don't have my prescription.

Thoughts?

Emily, The pharmacy might be willing to put a prescription lable on the blister pack for you.

I wouldn't worry about it. The blister packs should have labeling on it that will identify the pills. This isn't a security issue, its a customs issue. Since most airports in Europe rarely have customs agents on duty, the chance that your luggage will be inspected when you enter Europe is almost zero.

I wouldn't worry about it, I've flown in to Amsterdam and Copenhagen several times with 2 weeks worth of my medicines which I had sorted into a travel pill box, so they were not in their original bottles. Some of my meds are strictly controlled substances. I've never had anyone question my medicines. You could always flatten the boxes and stick them in a side pocket if you're really worried, or just cut off the part that shows the prescription :)

The blister packs will be fine.

In the highly unlikely event that security should ask you questions about this ( the chances are almost nil ) you would of course be asked by female security staff - it makes life much less embarrassing all round.

Don't forget that you can always speak to your Pharmacist about your prescription needs. In Ontario we also have a free service called "Tele-Health" which is free and confidential 24 hrs a day.
I use a brand of BCP that comes in a plastic dial case. The Pharmacist sticks the label on the back of the dial. The only potential problem with a label on a blister pack is that when you puncture the pack the label might get torn up. But still it is best to keep the label. Why not keep one box and stuff the extra packs inside? Remember to pack one extra pack just incase.

I am EMS Paramedic (and IC F/A) and I would strongly advise you to keep all medications in their original labeled containers for a number of safety reasons in addition to Customs issues.

People who remove labels or combine pills to save space are taking a serious chance and potential health risk. I always say keep the pill containers and lose an extra pair of socks!

Safe Travels,

F/A

Great question! I was wondering the exact thing. I need to bring 2 blister packs of pills with me for my travels this summer and I never keep the big box that they come in.
