We will be flying from Chicago to London using Brit Air. My wife has been having some leg problems and bought a collapsible metal cane to use at times on the trip. Question--should we pack this metal cane in our "checked-in" baggage or should she carry it in our carry-on bag? Will we have a problem getting on the plane with this cane either collapsed or extended? Thanks for any advise.
You may take a cane into the cabin.
I have one of those (with a rounded rubber tip like you'd see on regular cane). Have your wife use it while going through security if you like. She'll not be the only one using a cane I can assure you. It'd be easiest to just check it.
I traveled with a cane for a trip a couple of years ago. I had foot pain as well as not able to stand overly long without support. Security folk were very helpful. The cane was adjustable (search Duro-Med Aluminum Adjustable Cane with Offset Handle at Amazon to view) and I usually tried to push the buttons to make it smaller, though I think I just left it as is for a couple trips through the x-ray. If your wife needs it sometimes, just use it/carry it through security and put in the overhead bin for the flight. When you need it, you want it at hand!
I would use the cane through security. Then if will be handy for use in the airport and boarding the plane.
My personal rule: anything I cannot do without on a trip and is not easily replaceable on arrival goes with me in hand luggage.
