Pack-Mate in Stores?

Hi, I am travelling to Europe for a month and wanted to use the pack-mate travel bags to compress my clothes - I will be in all kinds of weather conditions. Does anyone know if these are in stores in the US? Also, has anyone used them? Do they work?

I know Target and Bed, Bath & Beyond carry them. They get mixed reviews. Some love them, others have used zip loc bags in place of them with good results.

Several different manufacturers sell similar products under various names. Look anywhere luggage is sold.

I find them usefull, but mainly because I tend to travel in the colder months. They work great for bulky items like sweaters, but they wrinkle thinner materials.

Kate,

You might check the Eagle Creek website to get a list of stores in your area that carry the products. As I recall, they offer a "PackMate" product.

Walmart and Kmart have them, cheaper but a different brand. Also Bath, Bed and Beyond sell them for about $20 for 4.
I used them a few times. They tend to deflate after an hour, but once you put them in your luggage you should be fine until you open your luggage.
I also used compression bags. They are water proof, but they don't seem to compress as much as the vacum bags.

My wife and I used them for a three weeks trip from Ireland to Scotland, England and France. I hated the compression bags. They take up way too much room and do not allow you to pack by squeezing things around other things. Also, they really wrinkle clothes (even though that may have been due to my "all thumbs" packing techniques). Just pack carefully and then push down as hard as you can. Besides, most people pack way too many things. I travel to meet people and enjoy different places. I do not travel to be a fashion statement.

Hi. The last 3 times I traveled by plane, I used the bundle technique to pack as decribed from onebag.com. It really did prevent wrinkles in my clothes. I used my hanging bathroom bag as my centre and wrapped the clothes around it as they say in One Bag. It was easy enough to repack. There are lots of other suggestions on packing lite on his site. I have tried the compression bags in the past and have found the bundle packing technique much more compact. I also use old plastic grocery bags a lot when packing to pack individual shoes wtih all my socks stuffed in them to keep them from being so squished and I stuff dirty clothes in my old grocery bags too; it helps me keep track of what is clean and what is dirty and tells me when I need to do my laundry in the sink. I use lots of different sizes of clear ziplock baggies to store other stuff, I save all brochures and tickets for my scrapbook in ziplocks and my meds like ibuprofen etc in another baggie. I carry lots of extra baggies of different sizes to keep snacks to put in my daypack. I usually buy fruit and veggies for snacking and picnicking at the open air markets. Happy travels.
